Under Mike Williamson’s guidance, the Calgary Hitmen have stormed out of the gate this season with an impressive 7-2-0-0 record.

In his first season as bench boss of the Hitmen, Williamson has liked what he’s seen so far from his squad, which is currently the No. 1 ranked team in the Canadian Hockey League.

“We’ve shown signs of being a very good hockey team,” said Williamson, who was named the seventh coach in franchise history on July 22. “I think we’ve got solid depth at every position and that’s key. At the same time, there’s a good opportunity for some of the young guys to step up and do more.”

While the Hitmen reeled off five straight victories to start the 2009-10 Western Hockey League season, they’ve lost two of their past four contests, both to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

“There’s room to improve our game right now and that’s what we need to do,” Williamson said. “I still don’t think we’ve really established a true identity. We’ve got a ways to go there. We need to stretch a little farther in terms of our work ethic and consistency and just getting more guys contributing on a nightly basis.”
