A close game to start in Chilliwack, but the Giants take over in the third to put the game away. the bruins were burned by taking a few too many bad penalties and the Giants made them pay. The Giants best in the league PK, held the Bruins to 0 for 5 on their man-advantages. Once again it looked like the Bruins were going to be competitive only to take their foot off the gas and get shredded for four goals in the final frame. I'm not sure why, but the Giants really have the Bruins number and it does not look about change any time soon.

Giants Thump Bruins
Vancouver 5 Chilliwack 1

Don Robinson

It started out as a pretty close game between two rivals, but in the third the Giants ran away with the game, scoring four unanswered to put it out of reach. The Bruins were sporting the blue jerseys of a war-time CFB hockey squad in honour of our veterans, on this, Canada’s Remembrance Day. After playing to a scoreless first period the Bruins found the twine early in the second on a SH penalty shot, but that was the only goal they were going to get. The Giants tied the game a few minutes later and then continued to roll on their momentum. The Giants special teams came to the fore, notching 3 of their 5 goals with the man-advantage. The Bruins managed to play pretty evenly with the visitors from down the valley for 40 minutes, but were out-worked and out-shot in the third.

The Giants and Bruins came out pretty hard. The Bruins strategy early seemed to be crashing the net with impunity and fore-checking hard and heavy. The Giants were not about to be cowed as they had expected that kind of play from the Chilliwack squad who they once again see ten times this season. I have to say that that many games between two teams is too much, it should be no more than eight between division rivals. The Giants dominate the series between the franchises so far, but the Bruins with Mark Habscheid behind the bench and some more consistent play this season hope to close that gap. The last time these two teams met was at the Coliseum when the Giants beat them soundly 8-2. The two teams played a tight-checking first period to a draw with each squad getting a few good chances, but failing to get it past either net-minder.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the second, tallying a SH goal when they had a semi-breakaway killing a penalty. Colton Grant made no mistake scoring his second goal of the season, with his first also being a penalty shot. The Giants tied up the game less than three minutes later on their first PP tally of the afternoon. Neil Manning threaded a quick snap shot from the point past Mark Friesen. Kevin Connauton and Milan Kytnar garnered the assists on the play. Manning still leads the league in PP points for a defenseman, getting a goal and an assist with the man advantage in this game. The period was littered with penalties as the zebras rediscovered their whistles, calling a lot of what they let go in the opening frame. The Bruins out-shot the Giants in the period and despite the penalties looked to be the better team in the frame.

The Giants took over in the third, when Chilliwack continued to get into penalty trouble early, gaining momentum from their special teams. Connauton scored a goal sneaking down putting home the rebound. The goal came 5 on 4 with continued pressure, after a 5 on 3 man-advantage had expired. The Bruins failed to clear the zone as the Giants kept working the puck around until they found a seam to the net. Craig Cunningham took the shot and a pinching Connauton found the loose biscuit. Manning, Connauton and Cunningham worked the puck around, with the other two players on the PP creating space and keeping the other defenders busy. Lance Bouma stripped the puck in the neutral zone and went in hard to the net. He fanned slightly on a shot which fooled Friesen slipping past him. The goal was unassisted. That goal tilted the ice in the Giants favour coming in the first five minutes of the period.

The Giants didn’t score another one ‘til later in the game, with just over five minutes left in the contest. Nathan Burns who a couple of shifts earlier took a deflected puck to the face, knocking out a couple of chiclets, was coming off the bench back on the ice on the rush scoring a good goal by taking the shot and having the presence of mind to pot his own rebound for his second of the season. The rookie player has been working hard to stay in the line-up and tonight coming off the bench injured and potting a coffin nail goal could solidify him into Don Hay’s good books. Burns was a 7th round bantam pick who’s hard work and innate skill set has endeared him to the Giants staff. Greg Lamoureux, back from an undisclosed leg injury and Milan Kytnar tallied the helpers on the play. Mike Piluso ended the scoring, pushing a small monkey off of his shoulders, potting a nice one past Friesen. James Henry who was working hard all night and could have been the third assist on a few tallies tonight, finally got a point along with JT Barnett who was a similar hard worker on the evening. That ended the scoring as the Giants hammered home the win with four unanswered goals. The refs padded their penalty stats late in the game, one for the Giants and two for the Bruins, to no consequence.

The Giants out-shot the Bruins 28-21. The Giants went 3 for 8 on the PP, while holding the home squad to 0 for 5. Tucker was solid, but rarely was required to be outstanding. Friesen had a decent night up until the third period when all hell broke loose in front of him. Not sure how Jesse Craige warrants a star other than some serious reaching by the home selectors. Connauton, Manning and Kytnar all had two point nights.

The Giants have a couple of days off before taking on the Red Deer Rebels at the Coliseum. The Rebs dropped a 2-1 contest to the Rockets tonight. The Giants would love to stone the Rebels and Andrej Kudrna who they traded to the Rebels for Cass Mappin. Kudrna has had two hat tricks since being traded. The puck drops on Friday as it usually does at 7:30 pm.
