Regan Bartel:
The Rockets acquire 20 year-old forward Tyler Halliday from Prince George.

These are the details I am getting from Allan Bristowe of CKPG in Prince George: "Halliday is a great team guy. He likes to get involved physically, and is no stranger to fighting. He had 21 fighting majors last season. Halliday was 6th in the WHL in penalty minutes with 161 pims last season, 32 fewer than former Rocket Ryley Grantham. Halliday had 15 goals as a 19 year-old last season. Originally a member of the Red Deer Rebels, Halliday joined the Cougars in 2008-09."

Halliday was released by the Cougars last week so essentially is picked up by the Rockets for nothing. Halliday, a Kamloops resident, joins Lucas Bloodoff and goaltender Mark Guggenberger as the Rockets three overage players.

On Thursday, the Rockets acquired Tyler Halliday, formerly of the Prince George Cougars, off the WHL‘s waiver wire, marking the second time this week Kelowna added a new player to its roster. On Monday, the Rockets sent top scorer Stepan Novotny and prospect Tanner Clark to the Swift Current Broncos for left-winger Geordie Wudrick.

While made on separate days and involving separate deals, the two acquisitions have something in common: size.

With Wudrick, a 19-year-old from Abbotsford, the Rockets landed a 6-foot-4 power forward who can score and play physically.

With Halliday, 20, he‘s a 6-1 right-winger who‘ll bring a noticeable physical presence to Kelowna‘s dressing room.

Last season with Prince George, the Kamloops product rolled up 21 fights and 161 penalty minutes - sixth highest in the league - plus 15 goals and 25 points in 66 regular-season games.

Briefly, what the two trades say is that Kelowna‘s brass isn‘t happy with how physical the team has been playing of late.

"We felt that being a 20-year-old, Tyler would bring some experience and character to our dressing room," said Rockets president and general manager Bruce Hamilton in a press release on Thursday.

A right-handed shot, Halliday had three goals and seven points plus 47 penalty minutes in 19 games this season with Prince George. Those numbers, however, weren‘t good enough for the Cougars, who released their assistant captain on Tuesday. With four 20-year-old players, Prince George was one over the over-age limit of three, and Halliday didn‘t survive the cut.

In 2005-06, Halliday played two games with Red Deer and again in 2007-08. In between, he played two seasons with the BCHL‘s Merritt Centennials, where he had eight goals and 11 points in 46 games and 150 penalty minutes in 2006-07, and seven goals and 15 points plus 155 penalty minutes in 2007-08.

ICE CHIPS: With Halliday, Kelowna now has three 20-year-olds, with the other two being captain and LW Lucas Bloodoff and injured G Mark Guggenberger.

good pick up for the Rockets. I liked Halliday and hope he does well in Kelowna.
