Tri-City Americans today with the seventh selection in the 15th annual WHL Bantam Draft have taken 6’4”, 190-pound defenseman Eric Mestry (birthdate: 5/28/90) of the Winnipeg (AAA Bantam) Sharks. The draft is held in the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta.

The draft serves as an identification process for players born in 1990 and for the 20 current member clubs in the WHL to add players to their respective 50-protected player lists.

“Mestry is an excellent skater and has a powerful point shot,” said Americans vice president/general manager Bob Tory. “He is a dominating force on the blue line.”

With the second pick (27th overall) the Americans selected his teammate, defenseman Tyler Schmidt. The 6’0”, 180-pound rearguard (birthdate: 4/13/90) also had an outstanding season with the Sharks. “Schmidt is a hard nosed, intense, physical player that will make his presence felt,” said Tory.

Both players are excited to be selected by the Americans and are looking forward to attending training camp in the Three Rivers Coliseum beginning September 1st.

Good question. I see that he is listed at 5'7", juuuuuuuuust a bit shorter Dion, but so is Chris Bourque compared to his dad, Ray.
