Always good to see James Henry be the hero. That guy works so hard at all ends of the ice. He's one of those guys who doesn't seem to contribute that much on the scoresheet, but with 4 SH goals on the season, rock solid as a defensive forward and tenacious as hell; he brings so much depth and is one of those character guys you would sorely miss were he ever out of your line-up. Thomas Heemskerk got shelled tonight and had to make some big stops to keep his team close. Plus he's fun as hell to watch. Great to see the boys put together yet another complete game and hoping they are able to do the same versus the Ams tomorrow at LEC.

The Giants haven’t fared very well against the Silvertips this season so they were happy to be able to gut out a win tonight. The G’s out shot the Everett squad badly, but the Everett ‘tender kept his team in the game, allowing only one goal mid third to tarnish his shining performance. He turned away 39 of 40 in the loss. The ‘Tips who had a soft December and a red hot January, have now dropped two close games to open the month of February. The G’s backstop was not hugely busy, but had to make a couple of really nice stops to preserve his shutout. The Giants played another complete game and pressured the Everett end of the ice most of the night.

The Giants and Silvertips played the first to a draw, with neither team wanting to make any mistakes. The shots were fairly even, with the Giants holding the slight edge. The second was similar, with the Giants warming up a bit in front of the home crowd. Both teams got their chances, but it was the Giants who upped their shot totals and controlled the play most of the time. Brett Lyon and Scott McDonald dropped the mitts for a pretty good toe-to-toe, in which Lyon connected with the majority of shots and got the take-down. The third it was all Giants and Thomas Heemskerk for the Tips. The Everett goalie did all he could to keep his team in the game, but a late very dumb penalty finally gave the Giants the chance for which they had been looking. Rasmus Rissanen took a very undisciplined penalty punching a Giants player on the ice from the bench side of the boards. Bad penalties are tougher to kill it seems and this was the one where James Henry finally found the twine behind Heemskerk. Milan Kytnar and David Musil garnered the assists on the play. The Giants kept up the pressure for the rest of period, not giving the Tips much of a chance to get that goal back.

The Giants out shot the Silvertips 40-18. They went 1 for 3 on the PP, while holding the Tips to 0 for 4. The refs were okay tonight, with a couple of head-scratchers, but mostly consistent. I’m not sure how a good hard check becomes a hooking penalty, but that’s splitting hairs. With one down, the Giants have another big test tomorrow night taking on the Tri-City Americans, a team that has given them fits this season and the best team in the Western Conference. A win versus them would be a major coup for the Vancouver boys and give them a huge lift going on their 10 game road trip. The puck drops at the Langley Events Centre Saturday at 7:00pm PST.
