I'm not sure what picks we have, but I would think that we need to draft some d-men. The team is considerably deeper at the forward positions with Balson, MacKenzie, Winther, Danyluk waiting in the wings and McNeil and Harrison already carrying the youth banner. Ruopp, Yaworski & Hrynyk currently on roster are great but we don't have much in the way of d-men coming up. Sutton and Kennedy from OHA are definitely not ready for prime time and IMHO may never be. Plus we've recently lost Aasman and Frank, so therefore need to get a little deeper on the blueline. ;)
I'm sure that the Raider brain trust led by Bruno Campese & Dale Derkatch will figure it out and draft well. Derkatch is a very experienced hockey guy. :groovy:

I hear Warman's AA Bantam Craig Leverton is a highly touted prospect (forward) as well. He's also a local kid to boot.

Joel Topping - AB, Defence, 6'0 170, Red Deer Rebels Black, AMBHL

This player would be a great fit in PA. Similar to Aasman but with better skating and more size. His brother Mitch plays in Chilliwack. Great family. Good kid.

" relative of yours ? "

No. But I did use to watch Mitch when he was a kid and playing occasionally for the Foothills Elite '93 group, and I knew his family to speak to. And of course have seen him playing with the Bruins. So at least the kid brother has the genetics and is a good player in his own right. I believe a team is built from the blueline out, and IMHO PA is lacking depth in this position.

Are you suggesting that every player and family I think is decent would be a relative? :(

sure his brother jesse can give him a decent review of playing there ?

everyone in the bottom 6 get a chance to move up. we can only move up to #4 but we only get 1 ball. Bruno actually even mentioned it on the show tonight.

oh really ? has it changed in recent years then. any highlights from the show tonight ?

he talked about Ravenko having a good chance of comming back. he also seems to think that he has trade value in his 20 year olds next year. He also talked about the reasons of not bringing up the prospects this year and said that he didnt want to bring them up because the mood in the dressing room was pretty down when they were eliminated by the Broncos and didnt want that to be the kids first experience. But said that he would have like to have called up Williams, Stewart , Winther and Danyluk. He said there wont be on ice sessions for rookies this year instead they will do off ice training , hockey knowledge and community events with the Raider picks this year. Bruno also said that he was high on Bascara from the Hounds and that Bascara has offers all over the place but thinks he has a shot to bring him here , but didnt sound to convinced about Smith in Estevan. When asked about Grit and toughness Bruno thought that that would be addressed with Mackenzie and Balson. He also seems pretty high on T.J Constant who plays in Manitoba jr A. He says he fights lots and scores. He hinted that Deck and Rowley were his 20 year olds with Ravenko if he comes back. He didnt really talk about who would be doing what coaching roles . But he did say he had a meeting with Mcphee and Broda about his contract situation next week I believe. thats about all I can remember.

hey thanks basara looks good i just wonder if he's too small (hope not). and if we had igor with deck and rowley that would rival when we had leonard ardelan and young.

Bruno has done a good job of stockpiling young talent. The only question will be: How to make room for Winther, MacKenzie, Balson, Basara and one or two others. Seems to me that he'll have to finally bite the bullet and jettison most of the 91 shrapnel that weren't producing.

Trade value in the 20 year olds? Lets see:

Hickmott - 49 pts in 72 games, this guy has shown steady improvement each year, always doubling the previous year's output. Definite trade value if Revenko stays put.

Reddin - 23 pts in 68 games with PA & Portland. Going backwards, had 33 pts the previous season. I don't see any value here.

Warg - IMHO the import has to be outstanding to also be one of your 20 year olds (ie Revenko). Is Warg outstanding? But there is some value maybe, but not much. He got traded to PA when his value was at its highest i.e. late in the season & PA needed a steadying influence on backend for playoff push.

Wall - is a team going to build their defense around this very average 20 year old? Probably not.

Hickmott is going to get 60 plus pts next season if he continues with the pattern of improving every season. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if he remained with the team as one of the three 20 year olds, assuming Revenko moves on. And even if Revenko doesn't move on, I'd be half inclined to trade Revenko for a top 6 forward or top 4 d-man with a birthdates in '92 or '91 who will be with PA and grow with PA for a couple of more years.

I saw Basara play in the semifinal playoff series and he looked like he has grown a fair bit, but still kind of frail looking. He looked pretty good offensively. Your other guy, Daniel Dale didn't show much. He kept running at Tyrel Seaman and ended up on his ass. He took a penalty after the whistle and hasn't been seen since. Maybe cracked his tail bone with all that bouncing around on it.

To quote Bruno from a couple of nights ago:

Campese says they will take the best player available when they pick sixth overall. If two players are equal they will look at their depth chart and select according to position (My money would be on a defenseman if that happened).

He plays small. The Raiders need to get bigger and meaner when on the road. Basara isn't going to crash and bang in mid February. And he certainly won't be answering the bell against Brendan Hurley on a road trip to the Kootenay's or competing against Duncan Siemens when visiting the Blades barn.

Going to be interesting to see the impact of Derkatch's scouting in the draft on Thursday. Any updated speculation on who they take?
Madison Bowie out of Man. would be nice but will probably be gone.
Doetzel from Rosetown area might be a D-man with some size.

The star Pheonix didnt even have him going in the first round however. they had the Raiders selecting another forward in the mock draft.

6. PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS

C Jonathon Merkley, 5-11, 162, Calgary Bisons bantam AAA

In addition to being the top scorer and MVP of his league, Merkley earned all-star honours at westerns. He is a fluid skater who seems to glide past defenders.

Stats: 33 GP, 30-41-71, 32 PIMs. Hockeyprospect.com ranking: 10

I'd be a little surprised if PA went for anything except d-men with their first couple of picks. On the other hand, if they do draft forwards, it might suggest that the development of the picks they've made in 2009 and 2010 i.e. Danyluk, Stewart, Balson and Winther was not what they hoped for. It could also hint that maybe one or more of their forward prospects isn't planning on reporting i.e. MacKenzie, Basara???

Raider Believer

It doesnt suggest anything if he drafts a forward in the first round. He said he is taking the best player available.

You're probably right. BUT .... drafting 14 year old players is such a crap shoot that I don't understand not drafting for position in the first round. PA definitely is deeper in forwards so one would think that maybe a d-man would be a nice catch in the first round. The first 10 picks should all be blue chippers. And gawd forbid we go for a small forward who doesn't grow!

The first picks are important, but as everyone knows it's depth that wins in the long run.
Players that can inspire a never quit attitude on the bench can be the most important piece of the puzzle. Individualists who sulk when things aren't going great can be poison.
When I read the Winther interview last spring and he said he didn't have a big year because his coaches didn't know how good he was and didn't use him on PP and pk , I wondered how well he had been scouted.
I'm hoping Detkach has done a better job of local scouting than has been evident in the recent past. Be great to come up with some mid round gems from Sask.
I sure hope Bowie is still there and they get one of the other Sask defencemen.

Lorange is a very solid pick IMO. I was hoping he was going to drop to Brandon. He is probably the best forward from Manitoba this year and he is natural center with good size already. He is very Scott Glennie like if you want a comparison maybe not as skilled but equally a good skater

if he turns into a eberle its not the last thing we need

True. And if he turns into an Eberle then I'll be happy to admit I was wrong! Right now I see turning down the younger brother of Mitch Topping as a mistake. And Joel is a very, very good mobile d-man in his own right. I believe in building teams from the blueline out. We already have a few Danyluk types, we don't need any more soft and smallish forwards.

He might very well be the anchor on the blueline in a few years. I'm still a little disappointed that the team let Joel Topping escape in the 2nd round.

Which one is older?

Jason (I think)
Is Ryan not eligible for next year's Bantam draft?

witness you are correct. Jason is older and Ryan is eligible for next seasons draft. Surprised Jason was passed over he was rated in the top 100 all season. Maybe thinking NCAA route or USJHL

My thoughts exactly. Heres a article on the Bruins site. They are very happy with him. He is only 16 and played in every game since the Raiders gave him away . Basically shown more then Mackenzie or Balson and you can be pretty sure Bruno wouldnt give them away. I understand that he might not have shown interest in playing here at the time but if you have to give him away at least they should have future considerations in the deal or else let him sit on the protected list.

I totally agree, PA should never have just given Persley away, I like the conditional futures idea. But truthfully his value was/is probably not that great. He was a decent Jr B product but didn't show well when he was playing Jr.A with the Vernon program. In fact, in 8 games he had zero points in Jr.A. Most of the time he warmed the bench. He has very nice hands and a good shot, but will have difficulty rising above the Jr B level with very sub par skating. In 12 regular season games and 6 playoff games with the Bruins he had zero points. Incidentally, he didn't play in every game after being acquired by the Bruins. He was acquired on Dec 28th -09 and played in 12 of the remaining 33 regular season games. During the reg season he got into 4 fights. One of the fights was a wrestling match with Persley holding on, the other 3 he got tuned badly. IMHO he will be hard pressed to make the Bruins team next season. Comparing him to Balson or MacKenzie doesn't make a lot of sense. They didn't get to show what they could do in PA except for 2 and 4 game stints respectively.

sounds like balson and mckenzie could have developed with the raiders and the raiders coulda dropped kochin, taylor (they sat a lot)

no matter what you think of his value hes obviously a good player dressing for all of the Bruins games. And hes only 16 years old. We had 1 regular in our lineup (they are rare) so he has to be decent.

How does dressing 12 out of a possible 33 regular season games after he was acquired by the Bruins equate to "dressing for all of the Bruins games" ?
But no argument, we should have got more for him. And I'm sure Bruno did shop him around. Maybe that's all he could get. I think Bruno did him a favor by basically releasing him and allowing him to sign with a team closer to his family.

Kochan ... I just dont see what others see in him.

I Agree 100%

Out of all the player's he's also got the worst "I play for the Raiders, I'm better than you" attitude.

Its another case of " I wanna play close to home" He played for all the Bruins playoff games. if he wasent a top 12 forward on the team he wouldnt have dressed. and if hes a top 12 forward on a playoff team I cant see how hes not on the Raiders

A legitimate and rational argument. However, I'll wait till next season and see how he stacks up against PA's new blood before I bring out the Kleenex and mourn his moving on. :p

To quote Bruno from a couple of nights ago:

Campese says they will take the best player available when they pick sixth overall. If two players are equal they will look at their depth chart and select according to position (My money would be on a defenseman if that happened).

That pick turned out to be Morrissey, the best d-man in the draft.

Has anyone heard how the spring fitness camp went this weekend?? Did anyone surprise the coaches or training staff? Did everyone show up?

its a little premature to call anybody the best anything in the draft
but im optimistic and hope he ends up being a star
