Manning got a point tonight, but second star honours as he played a very solid game. The Giants shut out one of the more offensively deep squads. First of four in five nights. Cunningham continues to lead the league in scoring wiht 90 points, he faces two of the players tied for second with 88 in Regina tomorrow.

Mark Segal gets the goose egg turning away 35 shots as the Giants shut-out the vaunted Brandon Wheatkings. The Giants put away two in the first to take a 2-0 lead into intermission. They added one in the second and one in third to take the game handily. Segal was very sharp tonight turning away some nice scoring chances. The Giants played a tight, disciplined and solid if somewhat stifling game – keeping Brandon shooters out of the sweet spots

The Giants opened the scoring in the first with Connor Redmond taking the puck and getting an unassisted tally. Jacob DeSerres was solid between the pipes, facing 38 shots, but could not keep the Giants off of the score-board. Tomas Vincour tallied a PP marker in the opening frame, assisted by Neil Manning and James Wright. In second Matt Calvert was awarded a penalty shot, but was stoned by Segal. Milan Kytnar tickled the twine in the second to push the Giants lead to 3-0. Brett Breitkreuz and Brent Henke, two trade deadline acquisitions, got the helpers. Craig Cunningham boosted his stats scoring one in the first minute of the third. Wright and Brendan Gallagher got the helpers. The Giants managed to hold onto their lead, playing a solid final frame helping preserve Segal’s third shut-out of the season. All of this playing time has improved Segal’s game and confidence and for him to stone one of the more skilled offensive line-ups speaks volumes about how much he is growing. Segal was a late cut from camp this season, but impressed both fans and scouts during his time in training camp. Losing a bit of numbers game early on, he has made the most of his opportunity since being recalled to the G’s.

The Giants out shot the Wheaties 38-35. The G-Men went 1 for 4 on the PP, while holding Brandon to 0 for 5. They put together a nice complete game versus this year’s Memorial Cup hosts, sending the message that they intend on being back. The Giants appear to have turned a corner of sorts and are finding good chemistry throughout their line-up. Segal, was piece of the puzzle with a question mark, but seems to be trying to change that to a period and hopefully eventually an exclamation point come playoff time. Tonight’s game was the first of four in five nights and it was nice to have the boys come away with a W to start the run. They take on The Pats tomorrow night, the Warriors on Friday and the Broncos on Saturday. Puck drops at 7pm local time in Regina.
