The draft goes today and I see that there is a goalie that is projected by some to go around the 13 spot. I am curious if he is available whether or not we go after him.

Who knows what our goaltending situation will be like in a couple years when he actually plays here. I am thinking that it will still be whoever the best player that is available is.

Rebels Select Kayle Doetzel with their 1st round pick. Doetzel is a Defenceman, 6'1", 175 lbs, from Rosetown Saskatchewan, who played last year with the West central Bantam AA's. He got 34 points in 20 games.

The goaltender (Comrie) was selected the very next pick, so the Rebels are not going to get him......

With their 2nd round pick (34th overall) Red Deer takes Cory Millette,5'10", 174lbs, a RW from Storthoaks Saskatchewan.

Millette got 92 points in 24 games last season with the Bantam AAA Notre Dame Hounds. According to Alan Caldwell, he also played 3 games for the Midget AAA team getting 2 assists.

92 points in 24 games? Really 4 pts per game?

Yeah, but would he be able to keep it up for 64 games? Kamloops' pick at #8 Matt Needham got 253 pts in 64 gp

Guess goaltending hasn't been identified as a future gap

Did we always have two picks in the 5th round or was there a trade today?

Ok we did draft a goalie. Alex Orth from Abbotsford.

5th round selection, 93rd overall (aquired from the Scarbourough/Perrault Deal) , was Alex Orth, Goaltender from Abbotsford, B.C. 6'2", 150lbs. Played Last Year for the Abbotsford Hawks. Thanks Alan Caldwell for the info.

The Rebels have Previously traded away their 5th round pick, but it looks like the have traded with Swift current to aquire the 99th overall pick, and have selected Kevin Pochuk, a 5'11", 156lb Defenceman from Winnipeg.

my mistake. We got the 99th pick from swift current for Morgan Clark......

6th Round, 122 overall nets the Rebels Scott Ferguson, forward, 5'11", 165 lbs, from Sylvan Lake. Played last season with the Red Deer Rebels Black Midget AAA getting 45 pts in 32 games.

The Rebels didn't have a 7th round pick and in the 8th round take Scott Feser the 166th pick of the draft. It is amazing that he is still there knowing what his brother is doing in Tri City. The Rebels don't have a 9th round pick either. No moves by Vancouver during the draft so far to get Landon and by the individuals they drafted (all BC kids with one exception) and their current roster I am inclined to believe that this deal is dead if there ever was one.

further on Feser, he is a LW, 5'8", 145 lbs and had 45 pts in 33 Games for the Red Deer Rebels Black AAA Bantam team. I like this pick.

Rebels do not have a 9th round pick, and
EDIT* - They do have a 9th rounder......must be blind this afternoon.

we should start to see teams passing on their picks any time now......

9th round, 188th pick, howerver 187th selection as 187 was passed by swift current is Dawven Berggren, a Defenceman from Saskatoon, Saskachewan who is 5'8", 140 lbs

With teams starting to pass, the rest of the draft should be quick.

That's odd, earlier it had shown that the 9th round pick had already been moved to Vancouver.

Scratch that. After passing in the 11th round, the Rebels selected Kirby Halcrow in the 12th round, a Goaltender from Grande Prairie 6'1.5" 222lbs.

Good size, and he is older he is actually 18. Not sure how an 18 year old gets drafted in the Bantam draft.

Rebelsfan13
04-29-2010, 04:16 PM
They obviously drafted him though to challenge for a spot this year. Played in the BCHL last year. Correction however he is 19.

I will be interested to see this kid compete in camp, looking on line he has had some pretty good highs in his tier 2 career and looks to have had a very solid playoff for Quesnel this year. I am really intrigued by this pick, did they draft him thinking Kuemper isn't back and that he could be the #1 guy while we bring a younger guy along? Is he a contingency to maybe be a backup to Kuemper if other prospects aren't ready. I can't wait for the fall to see this play out and how the drafted players turn out.

Halcrow was drafted by Prince George in the 2006 Bantam draft and refused to report. I think that he was a back up in Fort Mac AJHL prior to last season in Quesnel.

In Fort Mac he was getting very good reviews in his rookie year. Interesting about PG, thanks for the info.

Here is some more information cut from an article in Rebels Central. He seems to be a WHL calibre goalie, being drafted by PG not reporting put on Kelowna's protected list then dropped and he want to play in the dub supposedly.

The Red Deer Rebels might have a new face between the pipes next season.

The Rebels, with their final pick of the WHL bantam draft Thursday in Edmonton, took junior A netminder Kirby Halcrow, the only 1991-born player selected during the draft.

The Rebels passed in the 11th round, then, after the Kelowna Rockets dropped the 19-year-old from their protected list, took the Grande Prairie native in the 12th round, 254th overall.

The 19-year-old played with the Quesnel Millionaires of the BCHL during the 2009-10 season and his puck-handling abilities helped the Mills upset the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and extend the eventual league winners and defending national junior A champion Vernon Vipers to six games in a best-of-seven playoff series.

“We wanted to add some goaltending depth for next season,” said Rebels director of scouting/player development Randy Peterson. “We were tipped off by different pro scouts who watched him play this season. He wants to play in the league and we’ll have him come in and compete for a job.”

Be interesting to see what he's capable of. It's a good thing, we can carry more than 3 20 year olds to start the season, this way it's easier for the team to get a good idea if they need to keep Kuemper or not.

Rebelsfan13
04-30-2010, 12:59 PM
First it will be interesting to see whether or not he signs during the off-season.

RDRebelsfan
04-30-2010, 01:44 PM
That it will.

Was Halcrow just on a mediocre team that caught some fire during playoffs or something this past season? His regular season stats don't look too good. Playoff numbers, while better don't scream anything special.

Rebelsfan13
04-30-2010, 02:50 PM
He wasn't on a great team and from what I read, he won them the first round and he pushed the second round to 6 games.

This might happen a little late for the Rebels but rumor has it that a local kid will be available at trade deadline or end of next season, who is currently in the Dub and will be 18 next season.
