The Portland Winterhawks selected center Nicolas Petan with their first round pick, 16th overall, of the 2010 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Petan played 57 games with the North Shore Winter Club AAA bantam team of the British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association last season, and posted 76 goals and 63 assists for 139 points.

“Nicolas is a highly-skilled center who will bring outstanding offensive depth to our team,” said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. “We’re very excited that he was still on the board when we had our pick and we feel he will be an elite player for us in the future.”

Following the selection of Petan, the Winterhawks took defenseman Paul Stoykewych from Winnipeg, Manitoba with their second round pick, 38th overall. Stoykewych had 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points in 30 games with the AAA bantam Winnipeg Monarchs of the Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association.

The Winterhawks then traded a fourth round pick, 67th overall, and a fifth round pick, 102nd overall, in order to move up to the 49th pick of the third round to take goaltender Brendan Burke of the P.F. Chang’s Tier 1 Elite midget AA team. In 24 games last season he posted a goals against average of 3.92 and 87.3% save percentage. Brendan Burke is the son of former National Hockey League goaltender Sean Burke, who played 820 games over 18 seasons with the New Jersey Devils, Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, Phoenix Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Los Angeles Kings.

Portland then used their next third round pick, 60th overall, on center Preston Kopeck from the Medicine Hat Hounds of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League, where he posted 17 goals and 27 assists for 44 points in 28 games last season.

Portland then had two early fourth round picks. With the 72nd pick they took defenseman Branden Scheidl of the AA bantam Saskatoon Maniacs of the Greater Saskatoon Hockey League, where he scored 16 goals and added 33 assists for 49 points in 55 games. The 74th pick overall was used on center Steen Cooper from the Tier 1 Cowichan Valley Capitals.

With their fifth round pick, 104th overall, the Winterhawks selected center Wyatt Noskey, who registered 31 goals and 40 assists for 71 points in 33 games with the Knights of Columbus Squires.

Portland held the second pick in the sixth round, 112th overall, and selected forward Connor Hutchins, a native of North Richland Hills, Texas. Hutchins played last season for Detroit Honeybaked team that won the U.S. Nationals, a tournament in which he posted seven goals in six games.

With no seventh round picks, the Winterhawks traded a sixth round pick in next year’s bantam draft to the Kelowna Rockets for their seventh round pick this year, 141st overall, and Portland used it to draft defenseman Dylan Bowen. Bowen had 40 points in 40 games last season for the Kelowna Pursuit of Excellence team.

The Winterhawks selected forward Chase Deleo of the L.A. Selects in the ninth round, 192nd overall. Deleo had 27 goals and 56 assists for 83 points in 28 games for the L.A. Selects Bantam AAA team that lost to Connor Hutchins’s Detroit Honeybaked team in the U.S. Nationals championship game.
