Prospect Info:
Luke Moffatt was considered one of the best players in the world at the age of 15. He was drafted second overall by the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL in his draft year, and was one of the first players to commit to the NTDP for his birth year.
While he's still a very good player, and almost certain to be picked in the NHL Draft, he never quite developed into the player that some thought he might be when he was younger. The struggle for Moffatt has been transforming his game from the way he was able to play against younger competition--relying on his skating and strength on the perimeter, trying to everything himself, etc.--to how he has to play against better competition--going into dirty areas and using his teammates more.
After two years with the NTDP, Moffatt will continue his hockey career at the University of Michigan next season.

Luke Moffatt(Phoenix Firebirds): A lot of people were disappointed with his low point totals. He struggled to get things going offensively early in the week, but is still exceptionally talented. Aside from being so skilled, what stood out to me was how tenacious and competitive he was.
March 17, 2008: "15. Luke Moffatt - Compuware (U16)
Comment: Committed to Michigan. Maybe the most talented player at the camp. Needs to use his teammates better, and playing on a skilled team like this should help."
September 22, 2008: "Moffatt is another player that I wasn't entirely sold on going into last season, but his year with Compuware looks like it served him well. He should be one of his team's best forwards. I was also impressed with his defensive play and work along the boards."
Final Analysis:
If you look at Moffatt through a small enough window and just focus on how good he is right now, he could very easily go anywhere from the late 2nd to early 4th round. But if you take a longer view, he's a kid that has gone from the top of the heap a few years ago, to the sort of the middle of the pack now. Following that trend, what are the odds that in another couple of years, he moves back up to the top of this group again? It's happened, but it's probably not the wisest bet.
Moffatt does play a little more of a pro-style game, competes hard, and plays enough of a pro-style game that he should definitely be drafted, but his name isn't likely to be called until into the fourth or fifth round of the draft.
