Here's an interesting bit of news that came to light today. Forward Josh Birkholz has left the University of Minnesota. His WHL rights just happen to be held by Everett, and Tips general manager Doug Soetaert did suggest yesterday that another addition could be in the works following the Landon Ferraro trade. Birkholz is the only NCAA type on Everett's list who I've heard his name mentioned by the Tips. Hmmm.
The release says Birkholz was facing a suspension for a violation of team rules, so I'm not sure what to make of that.
Birkholz is a 1991-born right wing, meaning he's entering his 19-year-old season.
The 6-foot-1, 182-pounder had five goals and one assist in 36 games as a freshman at Minnesota last season. He was a third-round pick in the 2009 NHL draft by the Florida Panthers.
