Giants Nip Cougars

Vancouver 3 Prince George 1

It took the Giants two periods before they got started, but three unanswered goals in the final frame gave them the win, bringing them back to a .500 record for the season so far. The same refs were working tonight, yet they seemed to have their heads screwed on straight calling a consistent game this time around. The G’s still failed to capitalise on their PP again though. I have to say that playing Matt MacKay, Randy McNaught and Greg Lamoureux on a second PP unit, won’t garner them many real quality chances. I would much rather see the young snipers get the chance over a couple of veterans who are having a tough time finding the net and an under-performing Lamoreux, who has yet to earn that kind of ice-time in my estimation. Rookie 16yr old Dalton Sward opened the scoring for the G-Men early in the third as it seems as if a completely different team showed up to skate in the third period. Matt MacKay finally had some good puck luck as the puck went in off of a foot and past Priestner. Marek Tvrdon rounded out the scoring about mid-way through the third. The G’s ran the home squad out of minutes, managing the puck well and playing Giants hockey for at least one period.

Sward, Matt Bellerive and Blake Orban were the rookies again tonight. Orban had another solid outing. Sward got his second goal of the season and Bellerive had a few decent shifts, but might need to elevate his game and intensity as the season rolls on. Dalton Reum had one of his best games as a Giant. He had struggled mightily the first few games, but seemed to have discovered some of his stride. Mark Segal was solid between the pipes yet again, keeping his team in the game while they floated and squandered chances early on. No Giants player had multiple points tonight as the scoring was spread around.

The Giants have been having some very poor second periods in the season so far, failing to get many shots and seemingly sitting back or adopting a fragile hesitancy that in the end kills them and against good teams its been their downfall so far. It’s something they have to change and now and they really need to begin to bring full effort for the full sixty. The Giants kind of lucked out that the Cougars were not able to take advantage of their chances in the second period. At one point the Cats chipped a puck up and over a wide open net. There are still some big holes in their game, but it feels as if progress is being made. Thankfully they have almost a full week off before their next tilt to get everyone up to speed and prepared to execute Giants hockey at all ends of the ice.

The Giants out shot the Cougars 29-23. They went 0 for 4 on their PP chances, while the Cougars went 1 for 3. No fisticuffs in this one. It wasn’t the most scintillating hockey ever played and it was more a case of who made the last mistake, rather than who stepped up and made the great play. The Giants have until Friday to get all their players working out of the same book, when they take on Kelowna and then Kamloops in back to back games at the Coliseum.
