Giants Edge Blazers

Vancouver 5 Kamloops 4

The Giants struggled a bit on special teams, allowing 2 PP goals against and were not able to get any of their own with 5 chances. They came out flabby in the first, possibly still logy from Sunday turkey, and were lucky to be up by one after the first period. They have their 17 yr old netminder to thank for keeping them in the game as they weathered a first period storm. Matt Bellerive scored his first goal as a Giant early in the first, assisted by David Musil. The middle frame was a shooting gallery, with the Giants putting home 4 goals to the Blazers 3. Brendan Gallagher got one to go early in the second and then Luke Fenske scored his first of the season pinching in from the point. As they did on Saturday, the Blazers replied fairly quickly with one of their own. James Henry took back the two goal lead a couple of minutes later. The momentum flipped to the home squad mid-second though when Bellerive took a major for boarding on Blazer captain Schaber. Bellerive got tossed from the game and could face a possible suspension for the hit. Very unfortunate as the young player had some great jump in this one, well for half of it at any rate.

The Blazers put their five minute advantage to good use scoring two goals, but the Giants weren’t about to fold completely as they did on Saturday. Dalton Sward scored an ugly gritty goal to put the G’s back up by two and it’s a goal they would need as the Blazers tallied another one with mere seconds left in the game. Brendan Jensen was pretty solid as the boys left him alone too frequently. Marek Tvrdon was snake-bit in this game, failing to capitalise on a few great chances. It didn’t help that he was slashed/hooked from behind on a 2 on 1 breakaway with no call from the zebras either. Tvrdon also wore some moderate goat horns for a give-away which lead to a Blazer tally, making an ill-advised pass up the slot.

Rookie Watch: Dalton Sward had a goal and an assist in the game, Matt Bellerive got his first goal as a Giant and got tossed from the game for an over-zealous hit from behind. Cain Franson continues to play solid hockey, but was still kept off the score-sheet. That said - its only a matter of time before this kid finds the net as he is not afraid to go to the tough places on the ice. The rookies were given more ice-time in this game and looked to be producing with it, until Bellerive’s hit.

Fight Night: Dalton Reum dropped the mitts after Bellerive’s boarding infraction and although he hung in there, he lost badly to Underwood. Later James Henry took on Hanes, handling him well.

Greg Lamoureux poked his nose out of the doghouse this afternoon, setting up Fenske with a beauty pass. Marek Tvrdon was the only Giant with a minus tonight, having a tough time finding the scoresheet despite a solid effort. Good to see Jensen have a solid start in net tonight and for the boys to not give up and keep their lead, earning the win despite slipping at times. Gally and Cunner had their chances and were all over the ice tonight. At one point Cunner cleared a loose puck from the crease with a quick glove swipe. Colin Smith had a three point night for the Blazers, 2G 1A.

The Blazers out shot the Giants 38-35 and out sniped them going 2 for 6 on the PP, while the Giants were 0 for 5. The Giants have a couple of days off before meeting Prince Albert back at the Coliseum on Wednesday. The puck drops at 7pm PST.

Three Stars

1. Brendan Gallagher
2. Colin Smith
3. Chase Schaber

Dondos Doghouse: Special teams are in the doghouse tonight and the Giants undisciplined play. They are making games tougher than they need to by taking soft penalties. The back-check needs to be elevated (maybe getting back to limiting shots in the process) and the boys have got to clear their zone when they get the chance.
