Just looking at old draft records. We had traded a 6th round draft pick to medicine hat and they got Emerson Etem .

Why? Unless you think that the Blades would have also gambled the pick on drafting some California kid with a small chance of reporting? Or did you just not like Neufeld?

Sometimes those gambles on American born players can work for or against you. I remember back in the 07 bantam draft when the Rockets took American born phenom Luke Moffatt 2nd overall. Moffatt was a supperb talent at the time and decided not to come in the end. Instead he chose the US Development program and has faltered so much that he almost wasn't even selected in the NHL draft last year.

Then the following year, Kelowna once again took a risk on another California kid in Shane McColgan. McColgan like Moffatt was likely neck and neck with Rattie, Nugent-Hopkins in terms of potential at the time and he went 13th overall to the Rockets. He worked out, as he came and has excelled!

Do you really think that Medicine Hat was fully expecting Emerson Etem to come to the WHL? Likely not.

Another example is Colin Jacobs from Seattle. He was quite easily a top 10 talent for the 08 bantam draft but was taken in the 4th round. Obviously another case of an American player who worked out.

Portland also tried to hit the jackpot that year by taking Cason Hohmann from Texas. Hohmann was another top player for the draft and Portland took him in the 3rd round, he didn't come!

Everett in 09 took Seth Jones, the son of former NBA star Popeye Jones. He is taking the US route.

Point is, anything can happen in regards to American born players coming or not. Don't look at it as a Neufeld for Etem sort of thing!

Do u have any idea what the heck ur talking about? How many 6th rd picks even pan on to begin with. The deal was for a established WHL player for a draft pick of a 14/15 yr old kid who may not even step onto a WHL icesurface not even in preseason.

Drafting these kids are a complete gamble even high picks in the 1st round rnt forsures to be on ur roster or any other WHL roster.

Look back in the WHL bantam draft the Regina Pats selected Jordan Eberle in the 7th round 126 overall that means EVERY TEAM passed up on Eberle every round & he was the CHL Player of the Year & arguabley 1 of the best goal scorers in the WHL in the last 5 to 10 years.

Another example is the Pats selecting Jordan Weal in the 4th rd how about something alittle more on ur level for ur hometown team Bryden Holtby was a 9th rd pick, Dion Phaneuf was a 3rd rd bantam pick, & if i remember correctly Shea Weber was actually a list player.

All im trying to say here is the bantam draft is a crap shoot u never know what ur going to get when ur drafting 14/15yr old kids. There are tons of 1st rd busts as well. But taking a chance on players is what junior hockey is all about.

The blades then traded Neufeld to Vancouver for a 5th round pick in the 2007 draft. That pick was withdrawn by the league for violating draft regulations.

It was thought that Eberle would go the college route....that is why he was picked late. Would have been a different story otherwise....!!
