Steve Young will run the Raider bench for this weekend's Central Division road trip.

Coach and General Manager Bruno Campese says it has nothing to do with the team's run of one win in the last 12 games.

Campese says it's a temporary move to allow him to do some scouting.

The Raider boss will be looking at players on the team's 50 man protected list, players eligable for this spring's Bantam draft and other W.H.L. teams. He expects to be gone for about ten days.

Campese says Young was promoted to Associate Coach and Assistant G.M. last summer to allow him more time for duties like scouting.

A fan who e-mailed 900 CKBI's faceoff program Monday night suggested the switch should be permanent. However, Campese says the timing isn't right for a full time switch in that direction.

Campese will be in Medicine Hat along with just about every other scout. The Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds tournament features 16 of the best teams in Western Canada and a couple south of the border included in that number.

The hotels here are flooded with GM's, head scouts and other scouts with trade talk, prospect talk and a lot of buzz!

Young has been diagramming all the Xs and 0s and calling the plays most of the season anyways, while Bruno plays his strong suit, that of master puppeteer, alternately reeling from self importance, and adroitly covering his backside while pretending to be a WHL calibre coach. Hopefully the boys do respond, but I'm not overly optimistic for dramatic improvement that is lasting. My fear is that we just don't have the talent up front after our top 6 or 7, and the responsibility for that lies on Bruno's doorstep. He just hasn't developed them, and in some cases hasn't made the best picks. As I said in an earlier post, the bottom 6 forwards have averaged 2 points each for the season! Not good enough.
