The Vancouver Giants have added F Richard Vanderhoek, 19, to their roster.
Vanderhoek, who had 43 points in 25 games with the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles, was a sixth-round pick by the Kamloops Blazers in the 2006 bantam draft. He was pointless in four games with the Blazers in 2007-08 and was later dropped from their protected list.
Vanderhoek has joined the Giants and is expected to play Friday against the visiting Regina Pats. Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun reports that Vanderhoek may open on the Giants’ top line, alongside Brendan Gallagher and Craig Cunningham.

In the past couple of years we've seen more than our share of players take a pass on the Raiders, ask to be released, traded or whatever. Here is another example of a player, Richard Vanderhoek, that could have really helped us this year, and in fact before training camp was being touted by Bruno as being a likely factor for this season. Of course he refused to report! Now he's reportedly on the Giant's 1st line. Hard to figure out. Here he had a chance to play for Bruno Campese and earn his stripes in the stands, and then he went and chose to play for Don Hay and skate alongside two of the leagues top scorers. Go figure. It sure would have been cool to have had Basara and this kid lining up for us. They were within our reach. I guess playing in the WHL regardless of the coach or situation is not the honor some of the old-timers on this forum seem to think it is. Today the kids have options. Expect that another one of our players, a defenseman is going to be asking for a bus ticket out of town, and sooner rather than later. With the way the dinosaurs making up the BOD of this team are going, and holding onto Campese, it will only be a matter of when, not if, and this team will be extinct.

How about these two examples in regards to the Blades.

First round import selection and world junior player for Slovakia, Andrej Statsny wasn't able to get his release from the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation so he was dropped from the Blades list. Guess who picks him up and adds him to their list?? The VANCOUVER GIANTS!!!

Another example is 16 year old Brodyn Nielsen. He decided he didn't want to be a part of the Blades organization and was dropped from the list. Brodyn, is currently tied for the team lead with the BC Midget leagues Vancouver Canadians with first round pick Nic Petan with 22 pts and leads in goals with 12. He was picked up by guess who?? THE VANCOUVER GIANTS!!!

Just a few reasons why the Giants will never be celler dwellers!

The Giants are a stellar organization. Don Hay, a legendary coach who has won it all more than once, a strong ownership group, Bonner, Gallagher and a team culture that supports players wanting to play there.
BTW, the Blades have done pretty good despite letting a couple slip through their fingers.
