Giants Thump Tips
Vancouver 6 Everett 1

This was a game the Giants needed. Neither Silvertip goalkeeper was on their game and the Giants were working well together. The visitors got the first goal very early and then the second less than a minute later. The Giants worked hard in this one, but they also had the good fortune to put away virtually all of their good chances and some not so good ones. Mark Segal had a solid bounce back game after his disappointing outing in the game previous. The Giants PK was excellent though, denying the Tips on all but one of their 9 chances. It was interesting being in Everett for this one as the Giants played unlike they have recently at home. They rolled lines well and had a solid forecheck. Their PP was still struggling from poor passing and indecision, but their PK more than made up for it.

It was also good to see the newest Giants contributing. Spencer Bennett, who had a great breakout game as a Giant, versus Moose Jaw, continued to pair well with Gallagher and add to his point count. Teal Burns had a bit of breakout himself playing with, Jordan Martinook and Dalton Sward. I was impressed with the team unity as indicated by the massive line-brawl(s) coming out of sticking up for their teammates. I was also impressed with Joel Rogers first game as a G-Man, talk about an upgrade over Reum. He’s a smart shutdown defenseman who has a better than average shot, sharp passing and good vision on the ice. He may not be the second coming of Blum or Schira, but he brings veteran experience, calm and fills a gaping hole the Giants were having tough time filling.

The Giants opened the scoring at the 1:00 mark of the first. Teal Burns ripped a low far side shot coming in off the right wing. Dalton Sward and Tyler Hart got the helpers. 35 seconds later Matt MacKay put one past Luke Siemens he would want back, but credit MacKay for taking the shot and going to the net. Nathan Burns and Zach Hodder garnered assists. Sward added another very late in the first, helped out by Teal and Martinook. The Giants continued to roll in the second, after weathering a rash of penalty calls. Martinook got the goal, assisted by Teal Burns for his third point of the game. Bennett added one more just under a minute later. Brendan Rowinksi and Gallagher got the assists. Kent Simpson replaced Siemens to start the second, but he faired no better. Everett got one back on the PP, but a line-brawl followed which lost a few players on both sides. The Giants put the game away early in the third when Rowinski scored, with Brett Lyon getting the assist. The rough stuff continued for the rest of the third, giving the fans something to cheer for.

Rookie Watch: Sward had a goal, an assist, 27 PIMs and a +2. Hart was +2 with an assist and 15 PIMs. Franson was even with no points, but had some forays. Hodder was a +1 with an assist. Bellerive still at under-17s, playing on Team Pacific.

Fight Night: too numerous to mention. A couple of line-brawls that saw the Giants lose Joel Rogers early on in the second, sticking up for a teammate, before Sward instigated after being hit from behind. Rogers, Sward, Martinook, Hart and Teal were all given at least 5 and a game out of that one. More fights in third saw Rowinski take an instigator, 5 and 10, sticking up for a teammate. Fenske took a Tip player to task later, getting 5 and 10 and 2 for stigating. I do not have a problem with the team taking instigating penalties. The worst penalty ever created by the lawyers of the NHL, which has only succeeded in rewarding dangerous cheap-shotting pests, by not allowing players to police themselves. It was still very fun to watch from centre ice of Comcast Arena, as I had a great vantage point and the arena feels very intimate and is an excellent place to watch hockey.

Zebra Cage: The officials were a bit ridiculous and inconsistent with their calls and were Everett able to capitalize on their multiple chances, the refs could have really affected the out-come. It was mostly lop-sided as it was the Tips who were scrambling in this one for the most part and should have been given a few more penalties than they were.

The Tips out shot the Giants 30-27, but Segal was pretty sharp and the luck on the Everett side was mostly bad. The Tips went 1 for 9 on the PP, while the Giants 0 for 3. A few missed chances and posts for the Tips in this one. The Giants have had the Tips number so far this season, with a 4-1 series record after this game. As a side note: it was so excellent being in an arena offering amazing craft beer to go with the hockey, instead of the mass-produced crap the Coliseum offers. Rickards is NOT craft beer, it is sickly assembly line swamp water. I have to give props to Ninkasa’s Total Domination IPA, a truly fine hop intense beverage. I dream of the day the Coliseum carries Red Racer, instead of that sad and pathetic Molson piss they insist on foisting upon a dismayed public.

The trade from Portland, plus acquiring a veteran d-man with some chops from Swift Current for a younger, bigger less skilled d-man paid dividends even though the player was bounced early on. Bennett and Teal Burns have both added nicely to the line-up, contributing good energy and ticks on the score-sheet. The Giants have a day off before challenging the Bruins in Chilliwack on Sunday. The two teams do well winning in their own barns, but have struggled as the away team. Current series record 2-2 with each taking wins at home. The scoring has been very lop-sided, as neither team have managed to show up on the road. The best game was the last one, which saw the Giants win 2-1 at home with Segal taking first star honours by standing on his head. Puck drops at 5pm PST.

Three Stars

1. Brendan Rowinski
2. Jordan Martinook
3. Mark Segal

Dondo’s Doghouse: Our PP still needs some work and Manning needs to rediscover his point production on the man-advantage.
