Giants Claw Cougars
Vancouver 4 Prince George 3

The Giants feel more like a team again. They have got most of their injured players back, with a line-up sporting David Musil and Greg Lamoureux. They have a few shiny acquisitions who come from winning squads and they are bringing that energy and attitude with them. Darren Bestland (from the Wheaties) and the uber shiny 6’4” 215lb euro Andrej Stastny still had their wrappers on before the game. James Henry is still out as is Connor Redmond, but with a few trades and releases Bonner is forging a team not only to compete right now, but in the future. The two Portland players have fit in well and are bringing a very good work ethic and attitude to the rink and it has been infectious for some of the other guys. The Giants needed to stay out of the box tonight and their team game would have been complete.

The Giants opened the scoring in the first. Brendan Rowinksi notched a marker on James Priestner, assisted by Spencer Bennett and Wes Vannieuwenhuizen. Brett Connolly got that back on the PP a few minutes later. Mark Reners got them back the lead with Bennett and Rogers getting the helpers. Bestland increased the lead early in the third, off of Nathan Burns and Tyler Hart. That chased Priestner from the net to be replaced by Ty Rimmer. Spencer Ausuchak and Sena Acolatse added some goals from PG to tie the game at 3s going into the third. The Giants got into penalty trouble in the second and despite some brilliant stops by Mark Segal allowed the Cougars PP too many chances to hold them off indefinitely. Mid-third, Teal Burns picked up a loose puck from his own end and put on the after-burners ripping what proved to be the GWG past Rimmer who had made some pretty stellar stops himself in relief, before allowing that one.

Rookie Watch: Matt Bellerive not in the line-up. Cain Franson his usual across the board evens. Tyler Hart 1A, a +2 and 2 PIMs. Dalton Sward was evens across the board although he was on a line with Teal and Martinook and they had production.

Fight Night: Wes Vannieuwenhuizen dropped the mitts with Daniel Gibb a couple of shifts after the Giants first goal.

Zebra Cage: Derek Zalaski is mostly useless, nuff said.

The Giants out shot the Cougars 27-25. They went 0 for 2 on the PP, while the Cougars were 2 for 8. The Giants took some dumb penalties in this one and were a mite undisciplined, but not quite that lopsidedly. That said, they really are best when they remain focused and disciplined and take only those penalties that are unavoidable. The Giants blue-line is looking pretty solid with a couple of not too large, but most definitely tough defensive acquisitions. Darren Bestland and Joel Rogers both contributed tonight on the score sheet and defensively. Bestland also showed off a wicked point shot with his goal. Scoring was spread throughout the line-up as Hay now has four lines he is confident to roll, there-by not exhausting his top players before the end of the game as he was required to do more than he liked earlier in the season. Bennett continues to put up points since coming over with a couple of nice helpers tonight.

The Giants are up in PG for another tilt tomorrow night and are probably pretty happy to get the first game of the mini-series and at least get the split. They can now focus on stealing another one versus the Cougars, who are a much better team this year. Saturday’s game commences at 7pm at the CN Centre.

Three Stars

1. Brett Connolly
2. Spencer Bennett
3. Teal Burns

Dondo’s Doghouse: Discipline and focus in the house tonight. The Giants took some dumb penalties of the too many men variety.
