CALGARY, AB. – The WHL Player of the Week is forward Mark Stone of the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Stone picked up 13 points, scoring four goals and nine assists to go with a +6 rating, in three games this past week, helping the Wheat Kings to 3-0-0-0 record.
On Tuesday, February 15th, the Wheat Kings played host to WHL East Division rivals the Saskatoon Blades. Stone scored two goals, added four assists and was named the games 1st Star in the Wheat Kings 7-4 win over the Blades. On Friday, February 18th, the Swift Current Broncos were in Brandon to face the Wheaties. Stone scored one goal and two assists as the Wheat Kings downed the Broncos 10-1. On Saturday, February 19th, the Wheat Kings were in Swift Current for the back half of their home-and-home series with the Broncos. Stone picked up one goal, three assists and was named the games 1st Star in the Wheat Kings 6-5 victory over the Broncos.
Stone is currently on an 11 game point streak and currently sits 3rd among all WHL scorers with 86 points (32 goals, 54 assists) in 60 games played. The Wheat Kings have won five straight games, eight of their past 10 and currently sit seventh in the WHL eastern Conference with a 25-28-1-7 record for 58 points.
Stone, an 18 year-old from Winnipeg, MB, is playing his third full season with the Wheat Kings who selected him in the fifth round of the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. This past summer the Ottawa Senators selected Stone in the sixth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
The WHL has also nominated Michael Snider of the Calgary Hitmen for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Snider posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week, stopping 67 of 69 shots faced for a 0.96 goals-against average and a 0.971 save percentage. Snider, a native of DeWinton, AB, led the Hitmen to a pair of road wins; 3-1 over the Moose Jaw Warriors and 2-1 in the shoot-out over the Regina Pats.
