Giants Bounce Back
Giants 5 Chilliwack 1

The Giants needed to win tonight after letting one slip at home and they got it. They got it in the best way too as every player was ready to play in Chilliwack and dominated shots and offensive zone pressure for all three periods. Brendan Jensen finally got a start and played a fairly solid game facing few shots, but thwarting some late pressure when the Bruins used a 5 on 3 PP to shift the momentum in their favour. Depth scoring came out to play as well, contributing on the score sheet and with good chances. Braden Gamble as relief was pretty spectacular, turning away point blank chances and shunting aside other brilliant opportunities giving his team a chance to possibly claw their way back into the game despite being down 3-0 at the time. The Giants managed to keep the pressure up though and get their PP clicking, but did not take as many lazy penalties and did not sit back as they did on Friday night, when they let two two-goal leads slip. Chilliwack was undisciplined in this one, but was probably the recipient of a few over-exuberant reffing calls. The Giants added the only goal of the third to tally a convincing win, taking back the two points they let slip in Vancouver.

Nathan Burns opened the scoring early on, assisted by brother Michael and Greg Lamoureux. Spencer Bennett made it 2-0 going to the net and taking advantage of some good work by Neil Manning and Brendan Gallagher. Gallagher scored one just shy of the 15 minute mark, getting some good support from Jordan Martinook and Greg Lamoureux. Martinook seems to finally be a roll and Lamoureux contributed well in this one. Gallagher scored his second, a PP marker, about three minutes later off of some great puck movement by Bennett, who got the puck to James Henry in front of the net. With everyone expecting him to shoot, Henry dished it off to a wide open Gallagher for an easy tap-in and his 41st of the season. The Giants went into the intermission up 4-0, out shooting the Bruins 11-4 in the frame. The Bruins scored on their first PP chance of the game coming just past the midway mark of the second. Brandon Manning got it past Jensen. Michael Burns scored a PP marker in the third, managing to get it past a very tough Gamble between the pipes for Chilliwack. Andrej Stastny and Darren Bestland had the assists.

Rookie Watch: Bellerive sat. Franson and Sward back in, both even with no PIMs. Hart and Hodder were each +1, and solid on the back-end.

Fight Night: No fighting, but a ton of roughing calls

Zebra Cage: Bruins were a bit undisciplined, but reffing was slanted their way regardless. Adam Byblow and Jeff Ingram, were a bit partial to roughing calls.

The Giants out shot Bruins 37-17 in the game, and dominated the majority of the play. They went 2 for 7 on the PP and gave up 1 for 3 to the Bruins. Jensen was solid in his first win since November and his first start since, I believe, December. It was good to give Segal a rest and ready to take on the Americans on Sunday. I would love to see Jensen get a few more starts down the stretch to keep Segal hungry and rested come playoff time. Puck drops on Sunday at 5pm PST.

Three Stars

1. Brendan Gallagher
2. Jordan Martinook
3. Braden Gamble

Dondo’s Doghouse: Bestland creeps out of the doghouse and most of the boys are no longer there for the moment.
