Winterhawks Trump Giants
Vancouver 3 Portland 5

For the second game in a row the Giants spotted their opponent 4 straight unanswered goals to open the game. They scored three of their own in the second, but allowed one against in the third, without scoring any of their own in the final frame. Mark Segal allowed two goals on two shots in the first 6 minutes of the game and was pulled in favour of Brendan Jensen. James Henry scored a goal and earned third star honours in this one. I didn’t see or listen to this one, so I have no idea how the game went except for the box score. This was the Giants 7th straight and loss and unfortunately in the previous 6 they never really even appeared like they were in the game. Sure there was some poor puck luck here and there, but their offensive production and defensive breakdowns are what are killing them.

Portland opened the scoring 55 seconds into the first off of their first shot of the game. Their second shot at 5:36 also found twine, chasing Segal from between the pipes. The Winterhawks scored a third goal before the middle mark of the opening frame, taking that lead into the intermission. The home squad added to their tally early in the second. The Giants battled back in the second though. Nathan Burns scored an unassisted tally less than a minute later. James Henry scored one at 13:12 of the middle stanza, off of 15 year old Anthony Ast and Spencer Bennett. Greg Lamoureux scored his fifth of the season off of Brendan Rowinksi about 5 minutes later, but that was as close as they would get. The Giants held on until late in the third, but the Winterhawks added an insurance marker, which killed any come-back momentum.

The shots were 31 apiece. Both squads were 0 for 5 on the PP. Darren Bestland dropped mitts with Derrick Pouliot. Former Giant Craig Cunningham had a rough night as he was on the ice for all of the Giants goals. Jensen turned aside 26 of the 29 shots he faced. The G’s have little time before taking on the Rockets at the Coliseum on Friday, for the first game of a home at home back-to-back. Their final game of the regular season will be against the Everett Silvertips on Sunday at the Coliseum. The Giants can do no worse than 7th spot in playoff rankings at this point, but will be in tough no matter who they take on the first round. Puck on Friday drops at 7:30pm.
