Giants Blank Tips
Vancouver 5 Everett 0

Suffice to say Mark Segal has Everett’s number. This game marks his third shutout this season versus the Silvertip squad, yes this season. The win put the Giants ahead of Chilliwack and in 5th spot, which means that they take on Tri-Cities and not Spokane in the first round. The boys put together a convincing win, burying the Tips with PP goals and taking their 5th straight win versus the Washington team, after dropping their first game to Everett way back in September. The Giants did not start off well in this one though as the Tips had the shots 8-0 well past the mid-way mark of the first. The Giants made that 9-8 by the end of the period, using a couple of PP chances to pad those stats. Spencer Bennett had a couple of nice goals. Andrej Stastny had a couple of good assists and Gallagher got a goal uplifting his team, which struggled badly when their best player was out of the line-up. A couple of goals from the back-end and the rout was complete. It’s easy to say that the guys have turned it all around, but the Tips didn’t not bring a lot of forecheck pressure and were not exactly the best at clearing their end of the ice. Add in their tendency to take some poor penalties and their fate was sealed.

Gallagher opened the scoring on the PP, putting home a puck on the doorstep after Spencer Bennett took it hard to the net. Stastny did some good work keeping the puck in the zone for the second assist. Spencer Bennett got one of his own in the second as Cain Franson fed the puck to him coming into the Tips zone. Bennett cut back across the slot and flipped a sharp back-hand past Luke Siemens. David Musil found the twine from the point with a shot that I thought might have been tipped by Stastny in the high slot. Zach Hodder and Jordan Martinook got the helpers. Bennett scored a PP marker in the third, ripping it cross-bar and in glove-side on Siemens. Stastny and Brendan Rowinski got the other points. A late check from behind lead to the Giants getting another PP goal late in the third, as Neil Manning threaded it through from the point. Greg Lamoureux and Martinook got the assists. Curiously enough both goals on the PP in the third came with a mere 5 seconds off the clock in their PP.

Rookie Watch: Nielsen sat. Cooke sat. Olsen sat. Bellerive had some good, if limited, shifts and was even. Hodder had an assist and was +1. Nathan Smith had some good offensive forays. Sward injured (ankle). Hart injured (shoulder). Ast injured (head).

Fight Night: not a whole lot of emotion in this one no fights a few scrums.

Zebra Cage: Reffing seemed pretty rough early on and oddly didn’t seem to call the penalties as they were. Interferences were called as highsticks; slashes were trips, etc etc. After a while it seemed to balance out a bit better, but there were a few head shakers on the call side and the non-call side of the infraction tally, from my perspective.

The Tips out shot the Giants 28-25. They were 0 for 4 on the PP, while the home team went 3 for 6. The Giants looked pretty solid on the PP and PK. It was nice to see them challenging the puck carrier better in this one, but then against this team it’s an easier thing to do. It was also nice to see the Giants scorers finding twine and getting back a bit of that confidence they had lost for the majority of March. Bennett looks a hell of a lot more comfortable now that Gally is back, even when he’s not playing on the same line. Odd. Stastny had a 5 pt weekend and might be warming up in time to see his game elevate in the playoffs. It was also nice to see some of those pucks getting through from the point.

We take on Tri-City. The Ams have had our number this season and other than a 5-0 win a few Sundays back, the Giants have been on the bad side of some ugly losses to the Americans. The second season is a chance to at least get something back by winning one and possibly two games. I don’t see us taking the series, but we can at least make it tough for them. The schedule is as follows ( a bit squished  )

#1 Vancouver @ Tri-Cities Friday, March 25 7:05
#2 Vancouver @ Tri-Cities Saturday, March 26 7:05
#3 Tri-Cities @ Vancouver Tuesday, March 29 7:00
#4 Tri-Cities @ Vancouver Wednesday, March 30 7:00
#5 Vancouver @ Tri-Cities Friday, April 1 7:05 (If necessary)
#6 Tri-Cities @ Vancouver Saturday, April 2 7:00 (If necessary)
#7 Vancouver @ Tri-Cities Tuesday, April 5 7:05 (If necessary)

Three Stars:

1. Spencer Bennett
2. Andrej Stastny
3. Mark Segal

Dondo’s Honour Roll: Bennett gets the hardhat tonight for his work all over the ice. Gally was working hard and making things happen as he does, special mention to Martinook who brought more of the game we all want to see from him. His two assists were off of some good work.
