Royals defeat Vancouver Giants 5-3 before 7,000 noisy fans

As 7,000 fans, almost all with cowbells, erupted in earsplitting cheers when the Victoria Royals skated on to home ice for the first time at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre Saturday night, the free earplugs came in handy.

Steps away from the table where hockey fans were given the free cowbells was a team of hearing specialists handing out the earplugs.

“It’s going to be quite noisy,” said Dan Hickman of Connect Hearing, in what turned out to be a massive understatement.

Excitement ran through the all-ages crowd as, egged on by the ever-bouncy mascot Marty the Marmot, fans went all out to demonstrate that Victoria has been without a Western Hockey League team for too long.

“We are thrilled,” said Sharlene Lyseng, whose husband, Greg, was sporting a Victoria Cougars sweater. Over the years the couple has billeted more than a dozen Cougars and Victoria Salsa hockey players and are delighted the WHL is back in town. The Cougars, also WHL, left Victoria in 1994.

“The WHL is our favourite,” said Sharlene.

As the Royals scored their first goal against the Vancouver Giants, quickly followed by the first on-ice scuffle, it was clear from the overjoyed yells and cheers that the city has some new heroes.

Even those wearing Giants jerseys welcomed the Royals.

“I am so happy there’s a WHL team from the Island. Now we need one up in Nanaimo,” said John Manning, as he playfully scuffled with Marty the Marmot.

Fans were undeterred by the lack of Royals jerseys, making do with blue sweatshirts or whatever other hockey jersey struck their fancy.

Dale Toupin managed to score a Royals sweatshirt at the pre-season game and figures he’ll be wearing it for much of the winter.

“It’s going to be awesome,” he said, before the game.

“It’s going to be cool to see where the players get drafted from. We finally have good, high-level hockey in Victoria.”

None of the fans were more excited Marc Brulot-Sawchyn, who was celebrating his eighth birthday with 10 friends.

“I am going to get to ride the Zamboni tonight at the first intermission,” said the St. Patrick’s Elementary School student.

The Zamboni ride was part of a birthday package, he explained, wide eyed.

“I haven’t done anything like that before.”

Gary Harris, being pulled along the Memorial Centre forecourt by five-year-old Logan and four-year-old Dominic, simply wasn’t moving fast enough, according to his sons.

“Hurry, someone’s going to take our space,” said Dominic, pulling at his dad’s Vancouver Canucks jersey.

One of the calmest fans was service dog Chip the poodle, who, ignoring the surrounding cacophony, positioned himself between owner Angela Miranda and her partner, Damian Kruz.

“It is a bit hard for him to work here, but he’s trained to behave no matter what,” Kruz said.

Miranda, who works for Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre, one of the game’s sponsors, has worked with Chip for about two months and, when not attending hockey games, the dog alerts her to ringing telephones or doorbells.

Quite an experience...and it sure didn't feel like the usual Victoria "come out for one game" crowd. I think a lot of these people (and their kids) will be back. The sheer adrenaline in the building was remarkable. The roars for goals, hits and fights were explosive.

It looks like we have top-notch goaltending this season and I'm glad, because we're going to need it. Our keepers will be seeing a lot of rubber...aside from the expected rookie mistakes, the teenage sugar buzz of the first half of the game wore off a bit and the legs started to get heavy. Not going to win many games outshot by more than 2/1. But it's hard to overstate the importance of this win to the franchise, what with 4 of the first five games on the road - including the upcoming 3 games in 3 nights Northern Interior bus tour.

Great Crowd ! Great Game ! Great Goaltending from Hamilton ! Good officiating !

Loved Mark Donnelly and the Anthem ! Marty Excellent as always !

Of course, we'll probably never see a 'Sell Out' again this year !

Lots of 'Comps' last night. You probably noticed ALL the empty seats in Section #106, and around the arena after the First. ----- A REAL sign of, as you noted, a ' come out for one game' crowd !! ---- What REAL hockey Fan leaves after ONE period???? ---

But, all and all, a very enjoyable evening ! ! will certainly go again !

I loved the jabs that Dan Russell thru at the city of Chilliwack and fans of the Bruins. "Finally their is a rivalry between these 2 teams" and "Victoria knows how to show their support to their team" kinda got old the first time it was mentioned...but I think I stopped counting at 5 times said for each.

I know Dan Russell is a tool, and such a homer when it comes to the Giants...but seriously. Where the hell was he during game 5 of the first match up between Vancouver and the Bruins in the playoffs? Or the brawl at the end of that series that JD Watt and Partik Bhungal went toe to tow in one of the best Jr hockey fights I've ever seen?

The Bruins hated the Giants, and the Giants hated the Bruins. It may have been lobsided in the wins-losses category for the first few seasons (mark that up to miss-mangement from ownership down to GM down to coaching), but that can't downplay the rivalry. There was no team the Bruins hated to lose more to.

I watched the game in hopes of putting closure to the ****ty events where this city and the fans were raped of our team. However, all it did was make me cry a little to see the kids I stood behind, cheered for, stood in lines for autographs for, chatted with out in public with and did everything I personally could to support them and the team. And then to hear the lies and politics from Robison and Hamilton during their interviews, just made me furious. Especially Robison for the way he lied to everyone in this city, and was so quick to throw us all under the bus claiming we didn't support this team.

Robison can go to hell as far as I am concerned. I'm glad that Victoria has a team, I just don't know why it was at the expense of the Bruins, and why 5 years ago we had to start from scratch, and then the Oil Kings had to start from scratch...but that wasn't good enough for Victoria. There were teams in worse situations than the Bruins (Cougars and Ice come front and centre), but they apparently weren't even considered options. At least the Bruins where drawing more than 2000 fans to the games for a team without much history or championships. That's the part that really upsets me. We started from nothing pretty much twice in 5 seasons and the "lack of on ice success" was deemed to have been the final nail in our coffins. Nice. Love you too Robison.

Brodsky back in town with the Cougars name? That'd definitely happen.

Well put Nex...The whole situation was built on timing of the whoever had a lease coming up...planned so long ago. Planned long before the entire Minor Hockey program was given a new matching label! But the blaming Chilliwack is what pisses me off. I love WHL in Victoria, but come in the same way we and the Oil Kings had to. You've now got us to thank for bringin in one of the best coaches in Junior Hockey, a roster of 17 year olds that will prove to ba a force as early as next year and a great Giants Rivalry. In all this, the only thing that has not changed is my hatred for the Giants!...and that's just competitive hockey hatred. The real hatred if for Robison...Burke and Porter are close behind. I hope you all truely enjoy this team that our town put together for you. All the best to the boys! But don't forget it's in a league that is run by a guy that will rip your 'hockey loving' heart right out if it's in his best interest! Snif Ya Later!
