Calgary, AB - The 2011-12 WHL regular season heads towards its second weekend of action and final weekend of action in September with 20 games on the schedule for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
AROUND THE RINKS THIS WEEKEND...

In Calgary, AB, the Hitmen celebrate their home opener with their annual Game Worn Jersey Auction on Sunday. Fans can bid on game worn jerseys, with all proceeds going to the Hitmen Education Fund. The Hitmen also announced this week the launch of their new Mobile App .

In Kamloops, B.C., Friday is TRU Blazers Night when the Blazers host the Vancouver Giants. Fans can catch a special performance by local Kamloops artist and Canadian Idol contestant Paul Filek . The Blazers will also debut their new vintage jerseys for the game.

In Lethbridge, AB, the Hurricanes celebrate their first weekend at the newly-renovated Enmax Centre with a pre-game Tailgate Party on Saturday prior to their meeting with the Regina Pats.

In Portland, OR, Saturday night is the ever-popular Dash For Cash night when the Winterhawks host the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Rose Garden.

In Prince George, B.C., the Cougars kick off their home-ice schedule with the Pink Power Play game on Friday versus the Victoria Royals. The Cougars players will be wearing pink skate laces, and using pink sock tape and stick tape to help support breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the rink, and will be able to participate in a pink puck toss with proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

HUGHESMAN TAKES FIRST WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS...

CALGARY, AB. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Tri-City Americans' forward Adam Hughesman is the WHL Player of the Week.

Hughesman picked up seven points, scoring one goal and six assists to go with a +4 rating, in two games over the WHL Opening Weekend, helping the American's to a 2-0-0-0 start on the season.

BLAZERS MOUNR LOSS OF LONG-TIME BILLET COORDINATOR DORIS RUBEL...

Kamloops, BC - The Kamloops Blazers announce with heavy hearts the passing of long-time billet coordinator, Doris Rubel. Doris passed away this morning with family by her side.

Doris was a billet in Kamloops for well over 40 years, making a significant impact on the lives of many young hockey players who have come through Kamloops. In Kamloops alone her service originates to the 1960's in which she worked with the Craft Kings, Braves, Rockets, Chiefs, Jr. Oilers and the Blazers. She not only was busy caring for her own family, but coordinating the overall effort of finding a roof for every other player on every junior hockey team in Kamloops.

HITMEN'S ALEX ROACH SIGNS WITH NHL'S KINGS...

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club would like to congratulate defenceman Alex Roach on signing a three year entry level contract with the Los Angeles Kings.

Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced both the signing and the return of Roach to the Hitmen on Monday.

Saskatoon Blades vs Red Deer Rebels

Friday, September 30th

Duncan Siemens and the Saskatoon Blades welcome Matt Dumba and the Red Deer Rebels for a match-up between the reigning East Division and Central Division champions on Friday night.

The Blades opened their 2011-12 regular season with a pair of wins over the Prince Albert Raiders last weekend in a home-and-home series between the division rivals. Siemens, the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, has been named the Blades' captain. The Blades captured the East Division crown and finished first overall in the WHL last season with an impressive 56-13-1-2 record.

The Rebels are coming off a pair of wins on opening weekend, defeating the Kootenay Ice 3-2 in a shootout last Friday before claiming a 4-3 overtime victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Sunday. Dumba, a top prospect for the 2012 NHL Draft, has a goal and an assist through his first two games of the season.

It's the first meeting of the season between the Blades and Rebels. The Blades took three of four regular-season meetings versus Red Deer last year.

Prince George Cougars vs Victoria Royals

Friday, Sept. 30th and Saturday, Oct. 1st

Martin Marincin and the Prince George Cougars welcome Kevin Sundher and the Victoria Royals for a pair of weekend games in Prince George, B.C.

The contest marks the first meeting between the new Victoria WHL franchise and the original Victoria WHL franchise.

The Royals are in their first season in Victoria after relocating from Chilliwack during the off-season. The Cougars were the last franchise to be located in Victoria, calling the B.C. capitol home from 1971 to 1994.

The Cougars opened their 2011-12 WHL regular season with a 1-0 shutout win in Kamloops over the Blazers last Saturday. Drew Owsley put forth a 32-save effort to record his 10th career shutout and his first win as a member of the Cougars. The Cougars have been bolstered by the return of defenseman Martin Marincin from the Edmonton Oilers.

The Royals split a home-and-home series versus the Vancouver Giants to open their first campaign in Victoria, dropping a 5-2 decision in Vancouver on Friday before posting a 5-3 win at home on Saturday. Buffalo Sabres prospect Kevin Sundher (1g-2a) is one of three Cougars players to post three points through the team's first two contests of the season.

This weekend's meetings mark the first of the season between the B.C. Division rivals. The teams split eight encounters last season.
