Rockets Burn Giants
Vancouver 3 Kelowna 6

Didn’t get a chance to listen to this one, so it’ll be a short and sweet box score interpretation. The Giants continue to have their struggles between the pipes and with their special teams. Failing to score on their PP on four chances and allowing 3 goals against on the PK. This really is almost virgin territory for the G’s who often will be top of the league in special teams, but the sag last season and the woefully pathetic start to this season makes me think that a major shake-up is in order if they don’t want to be on the outside looking in. Oddly the Giants seem to have little problem getting goals (just not with the man-advantage), but allowing 4, 5, 6 goals against due to poor, poor play in their own zone, very poor puck possession and a completely scattered and inept PK is simply not acceptable. One positive is that the Giants are getting production throughout their line-up, with some young players stepping up, but their tending and special team woes could have them looking at the wrong side of the score-sheet more often than not.

Once again the Giants found themselves down after the first period. Kelowna notched a PP marker with their first chance with the man-ad. They padded that lead in the second. Jordan Martinook scored a solo SH’d marker to draw within one, but the second was not going to be a good period for the visitors as Kelowna scored two PP markers (one a two-man advantage) and one even strength for a 4 goal output in the middle frame. Neither Brendan Jensen, who was between the pipes in this one, nor Jackson Whistle the young rookie ‘tender, seem ready to actually take the reins and make some sort of a stand early in the season and the G’s might be forced to give up a quality prospect to acquire a goaltender that can give them a chance to win. Brendan Gallagher, back from Habs camp/preseason, notched one mid-third to try to chip away at the Rocket’s lead. Kiefer McNaughton scored his first as a Giant a few minutes later to close the gap a bit further, but that was as close as they would come. The third was by far the Giants best period as they out shot the home squad 16-3. The Rockets added some insurance scoring on one of their three shots, rubbing salt into already open wounds to give the G’s their second loss allowing 6 goals against for the second straight game curiously with both off of 31 shots.

The Giants barely out-shot the home squad 32-31, but failed to score enough to challenge. They allowed the Rockets to go 50% on their PP chances, 3 for 6, while failing to score a single tally with their four PP chances. James Henry bounced back from a horrible outing in Kamloops with an assist and +1. The boys have a few days off before taking on Spokane back at the Coliseum on Wednesday. The squad really needs to get themselves on the same page. The boys could use some simplification in their game and be willing to shoot instead of making that extra pass on the PP and stop getting caught chasing on the PK. Hopefully a few hard practices will get them working better together. The puck drops at 7:00pm PDT on Wednesday. Let’s hope it isn’t the poorly attended library it was this past Wednesday.

Frustrating game to watch. Kelowna got excellent goaltending and the Giants did not. Gallagher could have easily scored four or five goals. He was robbed several times by Brown.

The Rockets were able to capitalize on mistakes made by the Giants (mostly in the defensive zone). The Giants made things harder for themselves due to a few real long shifts where a defensemen (McNaughton in particular) was guilty of multiple weak clearing attempts which forced the entire line to be on the ice far too long. The end result of one of those mistakes ended up a goal for the Rockets.
