As the Seattle announcer noted, I think this is the last we'll see of Gamble. 3 goals on 3 shots tonight and then the hook. 20 years old. With a promising youngster in the wings waiting to apprentice under Main Man Hamilton.

Kent, WA – In a Saturday night matchup at the ShoWare Center the Victoria Royals took on the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Royals’ first game against a U.S. Division opponent this season. Victoria gave Braden Gamble the start in net, while Seattle went with Calvin Pickard.

Both teams exchanged possession to start the game, but it was the Thunderbirds who notched the game’s first goal. Tyler Alos collected the puck in the right corner and fed a cross-crease pass to Justin Hickman who tipped it past Gamble at 1:01. The Royals replied 2 minutes later at 3:29 on a 5-on-3 power play. Captain Hayden Rintoul took a slap shot from the left point that blew past the outstretched glove of Pickard for his fourth of the season. Seattle regained their lead on the power play when Dave Sutter fired a puck on net from the point that sailed through a maze of bodies past Gamble at 6:05. The Thunderbirds increased their lead 38 seconds later when Mitch Elliot finished off a pass in the slot. After the marker Keith Hamilton replaced Gamble in the Victoria net. Seattle continued to control the play for the next several minutes, but could not beat Hamilton. The rest of the period saw both teams enjoy offensive chances, but were unable to solve either goaltender as the Thunderbirds took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

The second period opened with the Royals shorthanded. On the power play, Seattle’s Austin Frank found a loose puck at the side of the net and looked to put it in, but Hamilton reached the paddle of his stick across the crease to keep the score 3-1. The first 10 minutes of the frame saw few whistles as the teams exchanged end-to-end chances. With eight minutes left in the period, the Thunderbirds broke out on a 2-on-1 rush. From the left wing Elliot looked to feed Burke Gallimore in the slot, but Rintoul slid down to intercept the pass. A minute later, the Thunderbirds’ Frank took Lukas Kralik hard into the boards from behind. Victoria’s Tim Traber went after Frank as the play concluded, but nothing would come from the scrum. Five minutes from the end of the frame, the Royals’ Kevin Sundher won a draw clean back to Robin Soudek, who unleashed a one timer from the top of the right circle that rang off the crossbar and into the corner. At the 17:40 mark Victoria pulled to within one after defender Kade Pilton put a puck on net from the right point that beat a screened Pickard. The marker was Pilton’s second of the year. Seattle held a 3-2 lead after two periods.

The Royals opened the third period in search of the game tying marker, but it was the Thunderbirds who had the best chance in the early minutes after Hickman rang a puck off the right post from the left circle. Seattle would double their lead at 6:40 on the power play after Gallimore dished a cross crease pass to Branden Troock who finished off the play. Victoria replied just past the halfway mark at 10:52 on Sundher’s third of the season. From behind the net forward Logan Nelson found Sundher in the slot who quickly shot the puck past the Seattle netminder. Three minutes later at 13:30 the Royals tied the game after Austin Carroll jumped on a rebound in front of the net and buried it past an out of position Pickard for his first WHL goal. Seattle regained the lead after Troock intercepted a pass deep in the Victoria zone. The forward then skated in and snapped a quick shot past the left shoulder of Hamilton at 17:03. Victoria pulled Hamilton late for the extra attacker, but could not find the tying marker. Thunderbirds 5 Royals 4

Victoria went 1/4 = 25.0% on the power play, while Seattle was 2/4 = 50.0%. The Royals outshot the Thunderbirds 43-32.

The Royals will now travel to Vancouver for a Thanksgiving Monday game against the Giants. Game time is 1:00 p.m. The Royals next home games will come next Friday, October 14th and Saturday, October 15th when they open a two game set against division rival the Kelowna Rockets. Royals’ rally falls short in Seattle

BY CLEVE DHEENSAW, TIMES COLONIST OCTOBER 8, 2011 11:06 PM

Winless heading into Saturday night’s Western Hockey League game against the Victoria Royals, the Seattle Thunderbirds looked like left-over American pickings on Canadian Thanksgiving.

Not only were the Thunderbirds 0-3 but outscored 15-5 in the process.

But there’s an adage in sports about “being due.”

And any team with 2010 Colorado Avalanche second-round draft pick (taken 49th overall) Calvin Pickard in the nets can’t be taken lightly on any night. When dialed in, the Thunderbirds goaltender is capable of stealing a game on his own.

Which he did in part by making 39 saves as the Thunderbirds won their first game of the season by outlasting the Royals 5-4.

It should have been a wary Royals team (4-4) that ventured across the border to face the Thunderbirds in Kent, Washington. That wariness would have been well warranted as Branden Troock scored the winner at 17:03 of the third period.

“It was unfortunate to give up that late goal. It's a tough one to take,” said Royals GM and head coach Marc Habscheid.

Victoria trailed 4-2 in the third period before goals by Kevin Sundher and Austin Carroll pulled Victoria level at 4-4.

The Royals also trailed 3-1 in the first period as goaltender Braden Gamble was chased from the net. Replacement Keith Hamilton let in the final two

T-Bird goals. Between them, the Victoria netminders combined for just 27 saves.

“We started off on our heels and battled back well,” said Habscheid.

“But the bottom line is we still ended up on the wrong end of the score tonight.”

Meanwhile, you can call Sundher the silent assassin.

Without much notice — as Emerson Etem of Medicine Hat and Royals teammate Hayden Rintoul stole most of the thunder in a back-to-back set Thursday and Friday in Victoria — Sundher has stealthily climbed into a tie for second overall in WHL scoring heading into Saturday night’s action. Sundher and Adam Hughesman of the Tri City Americans were at 13 points following Friday games behind Mark Stone of the Brandon Wheat Kings on 16.

Sundher added an assist to his goal Saturday for a two-point night.

The other Victoria goals came from defencemen Rintoul and Parksville product Kade Pilton.

The Royals continue on the road for a Thanksgiving matinee Monday at the Pacific Coliseum against the Vancouver Giants.
