Victoria, BC - The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that Joe Hicketts, the franchise's first ever draft pick, has been selected to represent Canada at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games, being held in Innsbruck, Austria from January 13-22, 2012.
The Kamloops, B.C. native is one of 17 players named to the roster to compete in the men's hockey event against Austria, Finland, Russia and the United States. The event will be carried out in a round robin format.

Hicketts, 15, currently plays for the Okanagan Hockey Academy in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. Last year, playing for his hometown Kamloops Bantam AAA Blazers, the 5'7, 172 lb defenseman counted 59 points (18G+41A) in 51 games.

The 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games are the first of its kind, allowing young athletes from around the world to enjoy a unique cultural experience as well as international sporting competition. Canada participated in the first-ever Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August 2010, capturing 12 medals.

Hicketts was also recently invited to play for Team BC at the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup, running October 27-30 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Royals' prospects Michael Bell and Ryan Gagnon were also named to Team BC, who will be competing against teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
