Great start to the first period getting 2 for 2 on PP.
Now to try and get the video announcer to quit calling the Royals the Cougars :D
Americans out shoot Royals 15 to 1 after Victoria has 6 SOG and 2 goals giving total 15 to 7

Couple of unexpected points there. We certainly benefited from a sloppy start by the Murricans. What's with no replays on the Tri-Cities video? I hope the boys have something left in the tank after Spokane tomorrow night and a huge bus trip back to the coast for Friday and Saturday games. That's a rough schedule.

Be interesting to see if Rod Stewart's kid Liam (forward for the Chiefs) impresses tomorrow night. Bet he gets a lot of trash talk ("Do you think I'm sexy?" "There's a nude picture of your Mom in our dressing room" and so on). Rathjen in net?

The Victoria Royals recorded what may have been the most significant victory of the season Tuesday night in terms of real value.

The Royals (8-6) defeated the Tri-City Americans, a U.S. Division power at 10-5, by a 5-4 count on the road and a long way from home in eastern Washington state. That’s no small deal for such a youthful group.

“We talked about it before the game — they [Americans] are a good, veteran team and we are a young team, but we weren’t just going to throw our sticks in and just let it be that,” said Royals GM and head coach Marc Habscheid.

Victoria netminder Keith Hamilton made 41 saves as his squad edged the Americans before 3,327 fans in Kennewick, Washington.

But even Tri-City’s 45-25 shots advantage may have been deceptive.

“A lot of their shots were kept from well out while we had eight or nine breakaways that we didn’t score on,” said Habscheid.

“Even with those shot numbers, we had the better quality chances.”

The Royals used special teams to punish the Americans before the game was six minutes old, getting power-play goals by Kevin Sundher at 4:21 and Robin Soudek at 5:31 of the first period to point this game the direction the Royals wanted.

Victoria rookie defenceman Kate Pilton of Parksville gave the Royals a 3-0 lead with his third goal of the season at 3:46 of the second period. Jordan Messier pulled the Americans to within one at 6:35. Steve Hodges of Victoria, with his fifth goal of the season, and Justin Feser of Tri City, with his sixth, traded goals as the middle frame concluded with the Royals leading 4-2.

Nathan MacMaster gave the Americans, who were coming off back-to-back shutouts over Prince George, a potentially key goal before the ice was dry at 17 seconds of the third period to make it 4-3. The next goal, if it came, would either tie the game or give Victoria breathing room, and loomed large. Jamie Crooks got it at 14:12 to give Victoria a 5-3 lead.

It turned out to be needed as Malte Stromwall counted just 47 seconds later to again pull the Americans to within hailing distance.

“I liked our resiliency,” said Habscheid.

“Every time they came close, we got one back. The energy was there tonight and so was the attention to detail.”

The game featured a couple of Americans blue-liners of particular interest. Although Victoria fans never got to know Mitch Topping, as a first-round bantam draft, he figured large in the team’s plans when the franchise was located in Chilliwack and known as the Bruins. Topping was traded by the Royals to Tri-City over the off season, just as the franchise was being moved from the Fraser Valley to the Island.

Americans rearguard and Peninsula minor hockey product Sam Grist, a former Victoria Grizzlies junior in the B.C. Hockey League, was overlooked in the WHL bantam draft but the late bloomer grew from six-feet into a pounding six-foot-four frame. Now in his second season with Tri-City, the defenceman was overlooked in the NHL draft last summer after being listed as the 91st North American skater.

The Royals conclude their four-game road trip, which is now at 2-1, tonight against the Chiefs in Spokane, Washington.

Brendan Persley had a go around with Mono but appears to be 100 per cent and ready to contribute. He brings needed sand paper and energy to the team for sure !:yup:
