Battle of the Hockey Enforcers to debut Aug. 27 in Prince George, B.C.

TORONTO (CP) - The first Battle of the Hockey Enforcers, which will put 12 players on the ice to slug it out for cash, will take place at the CN Centre in Prince George, B.C., on Aug. 27, says promoter Darryl Wolski.

"We honestly believe this is the beginning of a new spectacle," Wolski said during a news conference.

Confirmed fighters include John (The Reverend) Craighead, Patrick (KO) Cote, Lyndon (LB) Byers, Mike (The Reel Deal) Sgroi, Frank (The Animal) Bialowas and Link (The Missing Link) Gaetz, said Wolski.

"It'll be hockey fights without a hockey game," said Wolski. "And our guys won't have to sit in a penalty box for five minutes.

"The puck drops and away they go for 60 seconds."

A panel of five judges will determine winners of each fight.

There'll be pay-per-view TV of the event, said Wolski, who declined to reveal what the prize money would be.

Craighead, who flew in from Vancouver for the conference, was asked if the event would devalue hockey.

"If you don't want to watch it, don't watch it," said Craighead. "As a dad myself, I don't promote violence in hockey."

Wolski previously tried to place the event in various cities in North America, including Minneapolis and Winnipeg, but cancelled those plans when governing bodies placed roadblocks in his way. He has the approval of all necessary groups in Prince George, he said.

There is a good post on the white board about the guys that are trying to run this show. The promoters are made up of some ex radio DJ's and a wrestler. All people who fit the profile of nobodys who want to get famous. They do a great job of the publicity and getting the word out but can't deliver. They seem more concerned with getting famous than delivering the event. Last time they had advertised Vegas as the venue only to be told it couldn't happen. They tried North Dakota, then Winnipeg then some out of the way indian reservation all to have nothing happen. I hope this time they actually organize the event and have a place to hold it written down and signed, sealed, delivered before getting the hype machine rolling.

To no ones surprise the clowns trying to put on a hockey fight pay per view forgot to get the approval of the City of Prince George.

PG City Council voted 5-3 against having the event.

Back to the drawing board.

The Mayor is recalling this decision, not that he is in favor of it, but rather to have it looked at cocidering the impact on any future events being held in PG. There is a lot at stake here. The promoter satisfied all the requirements thrown at him, the athletic comission sanctioned the event. There is a contract, apparently "in principal" for the arena. If the City Council shuts this down AFTER having let it go this far will damage the situation here more than if it goes on. What promoter would concider having anything come to PG that could be construed as contreversial? PG will be known as the place that backs out of deals.

Prince George will not be known as a deal breaking city for calling off this crapfest. This *****show doesn't deserve Prince George. The promoter, rather than fly to PG to meet with city council and announce the event, held the press conference in Toronto. Why Toronto? What does Toronto have to do with this event? Other cities have turned the clowns away:

Winnipeg hasn't had any trouble attracting events to their new arena. All other cities are still alive and well. Wasn't Fargo considered? I think that arena is still full for most events.

Why won't this guy have the event in his home, Brandon? Surely after the Wheat Kings playoff run hockey is at a fever pitch. You can easily cram 5,000 into the Keystone Center. Maybe it's because Brandon realizes this guy is greasier than 100 quarter pounders.

Is that the best this Don King wannabe can do? Tell the city no other concerts and events will come to PG if they don't allow him.

Why is Tony Twist no longer involved in this project? Sasha Lackovic would whore himself out to the Horse Lake Thunder, but dropped out of this "tournament".

This event won't happen anytime soon. It won't be because of Prince George City Council, it won't be because of public outcry, it will be because this promoter is not fit to organize anything more than a pee-wee hockey tournament.

Just voted on by Prince George city council. The vote was 8-1 to overturn their previous decision to cancel this event. So it looks like this thing is going to happen after all.

Why did the council change their minds? All this does is bring money into the PG economy, so why not allow it?

Maybe a pending lawsuit changed their mind.

You hit it dead on Brad. The general feeling from most of the councilers was they could not afford to use/waste the $2 million that the lawsuit was pending for. It was a very vocal minority that wanted it scrapped in the first place. No there weren't many vioces intitally for it, because they were all in line buying tickets. The ramifications from stopping it would have been far, far more than anything coming (or not coming) because it went on. Glad to see the right decision was made on the event, agree with the format or not. :thumb:
