Looking forward to another good game this evening. Glad we have Hamilton in the net for us. With all the SOG we have had against us so far this season, I am suprised that we have done so well.

GO Royals GO

The old story...last game of a punishing road-trip...plus rookie in goal. Thinking ahead to being physically and mentally together for the 6,000 home fans Friday/Saturday. 13 shots on the Spokane goal. Didn't watch from start to finish, but for some reason it didn't seem all that bad. I saw some fast skating and big hits. If someone said "would you take a .500 result from 4 games in 6 nights in two countries?" I think the answer would have been a resounding YES.

Chiefs roll over Royals

BY CLEVE DHEENSAW, TIMESCOLONIST.COM OCTOBER 26, 2011 11:05 PM

Rookie goaltender Jared Rathjen’s first Western Hockey League start turned into what is invariably referred to in the business as a learning experience.

The 17-year-old Victoria Royal allowed four goals in the first period Wednesday night in Spokane, Washington, as the Chiefs went on to drop the Royals 6-1.

Not that Rathjen got much help as the Chiefs (8-2-1) outshot the Royals 13-5 in the opening frame en route to their seventh consecutive victory, while moving to 8-0 at home.

“There were some funny rebounds early in that game and our skaters didn’t give Jared much help, either,” said Victoria GM and head coach Marc Habscheid. “He’s going to be OK. He wasn’t the reason we lost.”

That’s for sure, as Victoria finished with a meagre 13 shots on goal for the game. Rathjen went on to make 27 saves on 33 Spokane shots.

Mitch Holmberg and Marek Kalus struck before the contest was four minutes old for Spokane. But when Steve Hodges pulled Victoria (8-7) to within one at 10:28, the game was still there for the taking.

But two quick-strike goals within 40 seconds by Czech centre Dominik Uher — taken in the fifth round of the 2011 draft by the Penguins and one of only two Chiefs currently drafted — and Connor Chartier gave the Chiefs their three-goal lead heading into the first break.

“We were down early but we weren’t in bad shape and were right there in a decent position when Hodges scored,” said Habscheid.

“But when the Chiefs got the third one [Uher’s goal], that took the steam out of us. We didn’t respond well after that third Spokane goal. But we want to be able to respond in situations like that, especially after recording such a big road victory against a good team [5-4 in Tri-City] the night before. You want to learn to follow-up. But this is a young group and that’s part of their learning process.”

Czech winger Marek Kalus put Spokane ahead by four at 7:06 of the second period. By the time Collin Valcourt scored Spokane’s final goal at 14:53 of the third, this game was all but done as Victoria finished a credible 2-2 on its four-game road swing.

Don Nachbaur — who took over on the Spokane bench last season to replace current Idaho Steelheads ECHL head coach Hardy Sauter — has the Chiefs off to a flying start.

These clubs have a bit of a history together, although it means little to Victoria fans. The Chiefs defeated the Chilliwack Bruins — now the Royals — 4-1 in the first round of the playoffs last season.

So with the outcome never in doubt late last night, it was perhaps inevitable the game would involve a few fights, especially between veterans who remember last season’s playoff series. Brandon Magee of Victoria and Valcourt of the Chiefs went at it late in the third period, as did Robin Soudek of Victoria and Tanner Mort of Spokane and also Victoria’s Jesse Zgraggen and the Chiefs’ Uher earlier in the third.

“That was a hard-fought [playoff] series last season and there’s still some of that old feeling lingering between the players,” noted Habscheid.
