A very unlikely pair of points, despite a more gritty effort from our boys. A travesty that Hamilton was left out of the three stars, but as was pointed out, those were probably voted on well before he did his best work (in OT and the shootout). He also had some help from friendly iron, without which we'd have lost on the order of 5-2.

Still tons of turnovers in our own zone, you'd swear our blueline was the freaking Berlin Wall circa 1965, such was our inability to get pucks out over it into the neutral zone. A nearby fan noted that it was like watching "the rink rats versus Central Red Army".

Great to see some last minute heroics again, get the building buzzing and instilling a bit of belief (self-confidence has taken a whipping in the last week). As a friend noted, "ha ha" to the too-cool-for-school folk who decided to leave with 5 minutes left.

Hope Sundher's OK for the weekend. Anyone heard for sure that he's sidelined from the WHL/Russia match?

I counted at least 3 posts for Red Deer in the second period alone. Lots of passes by us right to Red Deer players, especially in our zone. Two of our goals came off bad bounces/lucky breaks.

but overall, the effort was there for most of the game. Our PP passes too much and doesn't seem to be able to set itself up. A 5 on 3 and we had maybe 2 quality shots.

Marty parties as Royals edge Rebels in shootout

BY MARIO ANNICCHIARICO, TIMESCOLONIST.COM NOVEMBER 13, 2011 9:06 PM

The Victoria Royals weren’t about to let the Red Deer Rebels play the role of party-poopers.

A late goal from Steven Hodges and stellar goaltending from Keith Hamilton lifted the Royals to a 4-3 shootout win over the Rebels on Sunday night, sending mascot Marty the Marmot (who was celebrating his sixth birthday), 11 of his costumed friends and 5,372 fans home happy after the Marty Party.

Hodges forced overtime with just 35.3 seconds left in the third period. Hamilton made a stunning poke check on Alex Petrovic in the extra session and added two solid glove hand grabs in the shootout, on Daulton Siwak and John Persson, to preserve the win.

“I got it with the knob [of the stick], it was pretty lucky,” Hamilton said of the save off Petrovic. “I was just trying to battle and keep the guys in the game.”

He did his part, making 32 saves in total including five in overtime, but also benefited from four hit goalposts, including one from Petrovic in OT.

Down 3-2 late, Hamilton was pulled for an extra attacker and Hodges came through.

“I had faith in the guys. I had a good feeling about it,” said Hamilton, who watched anxiously from the bench on the tying goal. “Every once in a while, you get a gut feeling and hope it goes the right way.”

It did, with Robin Soudek and Logan Nelson both beating Rebels netminder Bolton Pouliot in the shootout — Soudek going top corner and Nelson scoring on a nifty backhand-to-forehand deke.

The win snapped a six-game win streak for Red Deer and a three-game losing run at home for Victoria.

“They were running the table in B.C. [four straight in Cranbrook, Kelowna, Kamloops and Victoria] and we were out a pretty good player, and we found a way,” Royals general manager and head coach Marc Habscheid said of missing Kevin Sundher.

“I think the way we won, too, scoring late to tie it and then winning it in a shootout — I think the guys are skating a little bit lighter for sure.”

The news gets even better for the Royals as Sundher is set to rejoin the team in practice on Monday.

“He’s close. Hopefully, he’ll be able to play in the Subway [Super] Series,” Habscheid said of his leading scorer dressing with Team WHL against the Russian Selects in Regina on Wednesday. “He’ll practice with us [Monday], get re-evaluated and then, hopefully, he’ll be able to play.”

“I think I’m going to be ready to go,” Sundher told the Times Colonist.

They came up with a big win without him on Sunday.

Josh Cowen opened the scoring for the Rebels at 6:35 of the first period, but Brandon Magee immediately got that one back for Victoria, tying it up 55 seconds later.

The Royals went ahead 2-1 on Austin Carroll’s effort at 12:42 of the first before Cory Millette evened it back up at 2-2 at 8:34 of the second period, shortly after a Victoria penalty had ended.

Persson then swept around Hamilton’s net and lifted the puck up high on the sprawling goaltender 3:08 into the third period, extending his point-scoring streak to six games, while linemate Turner Elson stretched his to seven games with an assist on the goal. Persson has seven goals and seven assists over that run while Elson has tallied.

But it wasn’t quite enough as the Royals wrapped up a season-long seven-game homestand, tying the longest franchise home stretch, which came in the 2009-10 season as the Chilliwack Bruins. Coincidentally, they both ended in 3-3-0-1 logs.

The Royals now head off to Vancouver on Friday night before returning home to face the defending WHL champion Kootenay Ice on Saturday.

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Royals and Red Deer Rebels closed out a two game series Sunday evening at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The Royals gave Keith Hamilton the nod in goal, while the Rebels countered with Bolton Pouliot.
The game's opening minutes saw both teams create offensive chances off of strong forechecking sequences. Red Deer would open the scoring at 6:35 when Josh Cowen took a pass in the slot from Colton Mayor and found the back of the net. The goal was Cowen's second of the season. Victoria would even things up on the very next shift thanks to a strong offensive zone sequence. Logan Nelson and Robin Soudek managed to work the puck along the boards before it popped out to Brandon Magee, whose shot found its way past Pouliot for his fifth goal of the year and third in two games. Victoria would take their first lead of the game at 12:42 when Mike Forsyth found Austin Carroll in the slot. The right winger beat Pouliot high to the blocker side for his second goal of the season. The score would remain 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

Red Deer would even things up shortly after a power play expired at 8:34 of the middle frame when Cory Millette finished off a centering feed from Brooks Maxwell for his sixth goal of the season. Victoria would kill off three Rebels' power plays in the latter half of the period, highlighted by several key stops by Hamilton on the Rebels' Alex Petrovic and Mathew Dumba. The Royals' best chance came when Jamie Crooks broke through Red Deer's backline for a breakaway, only to be hooked before he could get a shot off. The game remained tied 2-2 heading into the final 20 minutes.

The Rebels would take their second lead of the night at 3:08 of the third period when John Persson found the puck in a scramble in front of the Royals' net and slid it past the outstretched leg of Hamilton. Victoria looked to tie the game halfway through the period when Carroll found himself alone in front of the net with the puck on his stick, but his shot grazed the shoulder of Pouliot and deflected wide. Victoria would pull Hamilton with just over a minute remaining in the game. An ensuing battle off an offensive zone face-off allowed Magee to poke the puck to Steven Hodges, who let go a hard wrist shot fly that beat Pouliot under the arm to even the score. The goal was Hodges' ninth goal of the year and would send the game to overtime.

The overtime period would solve nothing, forcing a shootout. Robin Soudek would shoot first for Victoria and beat Poliot with a quick snapshot high to the glove hand side. Hamilton would stop Dalton Siwak before Logan Nelson converted his opportunity with a deke to the forehand side. Down to their last chance, the Rebels' Persson bore down on Hamilton but was thwarted by the Royals' goaltender to seal the victory. Royals 4 Rebels 3.

Victoria went 0/6 0.00% on the power play, while Red Deer was 0/5 0.00%. The Rebels outshot the Royals 36-31.

The Victoria Royals visit the Vancouver Giants this Friday, November 18th at the Pacific Coliseum. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. The Royals' next home game is set for Saturday, November 19 when they host the defending WHL champion Kootenay Ice at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The action begins at 7:05 p.m. For further details or to purchase your tickets today, visit the Victoria Royals Ticket Office, www.victoriaroyals.com, or call 250-220-7889.
