Royals look to cool off Giants

BY CLEVE DHEENSAW, TIMESCOLONIST.COM NOVEMBER 17, 2011 10:07 PM

In sports, you have to know how to put things behind you and move on because tomorrow is another day. And it can arrive quickly.

Victoria Royals forward Kevin Sundher will get another chance to impress Don Hay tonight when the Royals meet the Vancouver Giants in the PNE Pacific Coliseum at 7:30.

Sundher probably wanted a better score line than one reading no goals, no assists but 14 penalty minutes in Wednesday’s 5-2 Subway Super Series victory by the Western Hockey League over the Russian junior selects in Regina.

Giants bench boss Hay coached the WHL team Wednesday and will also guide the Canadian team in the 2012 world junior championship next month in Calgary and Edmonton.

Performances in the Subway Super Series will go a long way in determining Canada’s roster for the 2012 world juniors. But so does club play and Sundher gets another audition tonight.

“I watched the [Subway Super Series] game and thought Kevin did OK,” said Royals GM and head coach Marc Habscheid.

“Sitting in the box didn’t help. But it was a good experience for him. And it’s one game.”

Although important, the Super Series will be part of a larger evaluation process that will take into account Sundher’s fine performances to date with 13 goals and 23 assists in 20 games for the Royals this season.

Hay will certainly be given plenty to think about if Sundher can pop a few or set up some key goals today to break the Royals’ three-game winless streak at the Pacific Coliseum.

It’s one of those things said Habscheid, who doesn’t buy the notion that certain rinks spook certain teams.

“The rink is still 200-by-85. Only the logo in the middle circle is different and that the crowd in the stands is cheering for the other team,” said Habscheid.

“It’s just a matter of challenging ourselves more. We need a better effort [than the previous three games at the Pacific Coliseum].”

The Giants (13-8-1) seem to be hitting their skating stride and are on a four-game winning streak and 8-2 over the last 10 games. The Royals (11-10-1) snapped a three-game home losing streak Sunday at the Memorial Centre with a feisty come-from-behind shootout victory against the Red Deer Rebels squad.

The Royals return to the Memorial Centre on Saturday evening for a home date against the defending WHL champion Kootenay Ice (13-5-3).

“We have to be ready to go [this weekend],” said Royals defenceman Keegan Kanzig, the other Victoria player who will see international action this season as a member of Team Pacific at the 2012 World U-17 Challenge from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4 in Windsor, Ont.

The six-foot-five, 230-pound defensive-oriented native of Athabasca, Alta., will have no shortage of advice to fall back on in the dressing room. Royals forwards Steve Hodges, the 24th-ranked WHL skater listed by Central Scouting on Thursday for the 2012 NHL draft, and Brandon Magee won bronze last year in Manitoba at the 2011 World U-17 Challenge, while Sundher has a silver medal with Team Pacific when the 2009 U-17 Challenge was played in Port Alberni.

“It’s an honour to get to wear a Canadian jersey [all Canadian teams in the World U-17 Challenge wear the Maple Leaf] and I’m thankful for it,” said Kanzig.

Advice is close at hand for the 16-year-old Albertan.

“It’s a once-in-a lifetime chance to experience different kinds of skill sets from around the world. Work hard and make the most of it,” said Magee, whose non-stop motor allowed him to score in overtime to give Team Pacific the bronze medal in the 2011 U-17 event.

Meanwhile, Habscheid addressed reports the Royals are about to sign quick-footed American forward Ben Walker of Edina, Minnesota. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported this week that Walker will forgo his senior year of high school, and give up his NCAA eligibility, to sign with the Royals. The five-foot-10 forward had 18 goals and 14 assists last season in Grade 11 with the Edina High Hornets.

“We’re discussing it with him but nothing is done yet,” said Habscheid.

Wow, is this ugly. Ten goals against with 15+ minutes left in the third. Yowsa!

Oddly, I think this means we'll see a good game tomorrow night.

Coliseum a house of horrors for Royals

By CLEVE DHEENSAW, Times Colonist November 18, 2011 11:08 PM

Victoria Royals head coach Marc Habscheid is convinced it’s got nothing to do with the PNE Pacific Coliseum.

Yet the place has been no Playland funhouse for the Royals, that’s for sure.

The Vancouver Giants moved to 4-0 on the season in their home building against Victoria with Friday night’s 11-3 Western Hockey League victory. What’s most perplexing for Victoria is that none of its four losses in Vancouver has even remotely been competitive.

“We just get killed every time we come here,” said Habscheid.

“Every game here, we get it handed to us. If I knew what it was, I would tell you. We were terrible from the goalie on out tonight.”

The Giants again came out all cylinders hammering against the Royals, outshooting Victoria 23-5 in taking a first-period lead on goals by Dalton Sward at 14:47 and Nanaimo-product Neil Manning on the power play at 17:02.

“I thought we were good in the first 10 minutes and we were engaged,” said Habscheid.

“Their first goal deflated us. And then is snowballed.”

Did it ever, as Vancouver opened a 9-1 shots advantage and 5-0 lead by 8:18 of the second period as Manning and Sward struck on power plays with Marek Tvrdon popping another on the beleaguered Royals (11-11-1), who lost for the fourth time in five games.

It kept unravelling for Victoria as Tvrdon got his second counter and Manning his hat-trick goal, again on the power play, with Taylor Makin adding another as the Giants headed into the second break leading 8-0.

Logan Nelson, Jamie Crooks and Steve Hodges managed to finally break through with Victoria goals in the third period. The Giants also got three in the third from Sward, Cain Franson and recently Montreal Canadiens-inked Brendan Gallagher.

Shots overall stood at 46-17 for Vancouver.

The Giants (14-8-1) are putting it into another gear and have won five straight games and are 9-2 over the last 11 games.

Starting Victoria netminder Keith Hamilton was replaced by Jared Rathjen after the fourth Vancouver goal at 4:08 of the second period.

“We can’t dwell on it,” said Habscheid.

“We were not good tonight and we have to put this one behind us and go into [Saturday]. It’s a good thing that we play again, but that’s a good team [defending WHL-champion Kootenay Ice] we face.”
