The last two Mac's tourney MVP's were in the Wheat Kings lineup tonight. One might be available if Cam Braes is.

Congrats to F – Tyler Wong and D – Lenny Hackman of the UFA Bisons for making it to the Championship game. They did not win the game, but none the less a major accomplishment for these 2 young men. I watched the final game and they both played well. Wong was more physical than I have seen him in the past and Hackman looked a lot better than the 9th round bantam pick that he was for the Canes in 2010.

Also, huge cudos to 15 year old Reid Duke. The Canes 5th overall pick in the 2011 draft was chosen as a second team all-star forward. To top it all off, Duke won the award for the best plus/minus player in the entire tournament. Both the all-star team selection and this award are awesome for a 15 year old player.

Mac’s Tournament second team all-stars (Male):
G – Devin Green – Calgary Northstars
D – Bobby Zinkin – Calgary Northstars
D – Brycen Martin – Calgary Buffaloes
F – Brett Boehm – Beardy’s Blackhawks
F – Reid Duke – Calgary Royals
F – Eugeny Lyzin – Russia Severstal/Locomotiv

M-Macs Tournament 1st Team All- Stars (Male)
G-Wilson Sproule-UFA Bisons
D-Brandon Tkachuk-Calgary Flames
D- Michael Statchuk-Prince Albert Mintos
F- Riley Whittingham- Calgary Northstars

Duke got a couple of points tonight (1 goal + 1 assist) in his 6th game in the WHL, right after his award winning performance at the Mac's this week. Let's just hope Preston does not ruin this kids career like it appears he may have with Merkely.

"Let's just hope Preston does not ruin this kids career like it appears he may have with Merkely."

Are you kidding me? *** are you talking about? You honestly think Merkley's career may be ruined? Why? Because he is playing on the fourth line and yet still scoring? That is the most ridiculous crap I have heard in awhile. The kid has 14 points (7g,7a) in 28 games and is the rookie scoring leader. I don't think I would count his career as being in the trash can just yet.

OK I agree. Ruined his career was a bit harsh. It is just that Merkely seems to have regressed a bit lately. Riding the Pine for a lot of recent games can't be helping his confidence. I know he has 14 points but here are his numbers for the last 10 games. 2 goals and 1 assist in 10 games and no points in his last 4 games. Does that sound like he is learning from the coaching and getting better?
Not knocking Merkely here but like I said, he is getting fewer and fewer points and less and less ice time. I know the coaches have to play the players they think are going to help them win. With a 3rd overall bantam pick you should be giving him a lot more ice time and let him develop.

If you ask someone on the inside that is wiling to talk to you in confidence you will see that maybe there is a reason for his 4th-line-status. I amtired of people assuming that everything is black and white. Every time you attempt to judge someone and accuse them of ruining a 16 year old player's career consider the part of the picture you DON'T see.

I know a little behind on this one but thought I would add a couple. Didn't get to see Duke but saw enough of him last year to know he will continue to live up to the hype.

Most impressed with the steps forward Wong took from last year. His puck protection was great and for many games he was the Bisons best player or second best right behind their goalie. A player I would compare his game to was Ryan White of the Hitmen a few years back. Looked really good at the tournament. Nice mid-round grab for the Canes.

How did he look on his call-up?
