Giants Split in Victoria

Vancouver 2 Victoria 5
Vancouver 6 Victoria 0

Game 1 saw the Royals go up early in the first and hold the lead throughout, scoring as needed when the Giants looked to be coming back. Despite being out shot by the Giants in the first period, the Royals lead by two at the end of the opening frame. Game 2 was a Sunday afternoon tilt in which Adam Morrison tallied his very first shut-out of the season. Although the top line contributed early it was mainly the support players that filled the net as the game went on.

Saturday:
Victoria opened the scoring with two in the first, one of which came on the PP. Nathan Burns responded early in the first, assisted by Taylor Makin and Tyler Vanscourt to pull to within one. Victoria used another PP chance to re-establish their 2 goal bulge. Gallagher scored his 40th of the season, now having 40+ goals for three straight seasons, to narrow the lead back to one. Jordan Martinook and Neil Manning got the helpers. Less than 30 seconds later the Royals put their lead back to two. The only goal in the third was an empty net marker.

Sunday:
Couldn’t have been more different. The Giants scored 15 seconds into the game, facing Jared Rathjen between the pipes for the second straight game. Riley Kieser notched his 5th off of Gallagher and Martinook. The score remained that way until the Giants broke it out in the second beginning with a PP marker by David Musil at 3:45. Cain Franson and Jackson Houck with the helpers. Vanscourt added one about five minutes later, with Marek Tvrdon and Kieser getting the extra points. Matt Bellerive put home a solo effort at about the mid-way mark of the middle frame to increase the G’s led to 4-0. Houck scored one more late in the period, with Kiefer McNaughton and Alex Kuvaev hitting the scoresheet. Cain Franson scored his 26th in the third with Bellerive and Burns getting the assists, to really put the game out of reach. The Giants had to work to hold on to the shut-out bid late in the game, but managed to help Morrison with his first goose-egg of the season.

Same officials both games, James Nissen and Reagan Vetter, but I did not experience enough of either game to make a determination as to their effectiveness. The chances were lopsided one way and then the other in the two games.

Game 1: Giants out shot the Royals 31-27, but went 0 for 4 on their PP, while the home squad was 2 for 6. Game 2: Giants out shot the Royals 37-18, went 1 for 7 on what has become a fairly ineffectual PP, but held the Royals to 0 for 3 on their chances. I suspect the Giants were tired and more than a little let-down from their loss to the Tigers on Friday and showed up on Saturday less than enthusiastic and not ready to play. Scott Cooke and Kade Pilton dropped the mitts in Saturday’s tilt and Taylor Makin and Ben Walker went toe-to-toe in Sunday’s game. I was expecting the Giants to get the sweep across the pond, but a split is the next best thing. Tonight they take on the very tough and hard to play Tri-City Americans. This is a team the Giants always have a tough time beating and pulled out a win Kennewick by the skin of their teeth a few weeks back. If the G’s hope to keep pace with the Chiefs and have a hope of getting home ice in the first round, they must find a way to beat Tri-City. For you season ticket holders out there, tonight is also the last night to trade in those unused tickets. The puck drops tonight at the Rink on Renfrew at 7pm.

I just found out that they have added an extra unused ticket night (March 16th) that is all.
