The Lethbridge Hurricanes and Kootenay Ice have announced a two game series to be played in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. The pre season games will take place Friday September 16th and Saturday September 17th at the Multiplex in Yellowknife.

The series marks the first time the Western Hockey league has held a game in the Northwest Territories since the Edmonton Oil Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers faced off in early 1980s. “We are very excited about the opportunity to showcase our league in Yellow Knife. It will be a memorable experience for both organizations and the people of Yellow Knife”, said Hurricanes’ General Manager Darren Stocker.

““Being a part of such a special event is very exciting to our organization. We are looking forward to the experience of visiting the City of Yellowknife and having the opportunity to meet with members of the community as well as showcase our sport,” commented Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay Ice”.
The event will aid the fundraising efforts of Facilities For Kids a non profit organization working with sports and recreation organizations to identify needs, and raise funds to develop facilities for kids in Yellowknife. “This event is a great way to showcase the Western Hockey League in Yellowknife and help a great cause”, said Series organizer Joe Latremouille.

Culturally diverse and loaded with history, Yellowknife lies on the northern shores of Great Slave Lake. The city of 20,000 was built on gold, but has now proudly become the Diamond Capital of North America. This gateway to the Arctic is located 1,500 km north of Edmonton, Alberta.
