Royals' schedule has some Giant hurdles

Like Fred and Ginger, peanut butter and jam, you’d better get used to it.

The Victoria Royals will again play more games against the Vancouver Giants than any other team — opening the 2012-13 Western Hockey League season with the first two of 10 encounters Sept. 21 at the Pacific Coliseum and Sept. 22 at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

The Royals will play the other B.C. Division rivals — Kelowna, Kamloops and Prince George — eight times each. There are a total of four games, two home and two away, against all five American Division squads. There are six home dates and none away against the Eastern Division and three at home and nine away against the Central Division.

Royals president Dave Dakers said because of geography, the games against Vancouver allow for the option of more single-game dates at the Memorial Centre than the two-game stands of most WHL visiting teams.

There are 11 such two-game stands this season against the same team, making up 22 of the 36 home dates.

The Royals have 21 home weekend games on Fridays (11) and Saturdays (10).

“That’s four more weekend games than last season,” noted a pleased Dakers.

There are seven home dates on Tuesdays, five on Wednesdays, two on Sundays and one on Thursday.

“We have less mid-week doubleheaders this year,” said Dakers.

The longest home stand is six games between Nov. 16 and 27. The longest road trip is seven games over 10 days from Feb. 8 to 17 when the Royals start in Tri-City and wind their way up through Alberta.

“Because the Eastern Division comes here, there will be fewer nights on the road this season than last,” said Dakers.

The final Royals home date is March 15 against the Everett Silvertips, with the regular season closing the following night in Everett.
