Traded for Geordie Maguire who was the AAA midget scoring champion for the Winnipeg Wild last year. Maguire is a big kid at 6'2 180 and will look really good on our rebuilding team next year.

Steal of a trade

Good trade for the Wheats. Lots of potential in Maguire---Anderson not in the Wheats plans--had 3 5th round bantam picks--good to see Kelly turning those extra picks into assests. Good for Maguire as he is close to home and comes to a team with a lot of openings at forward. Great move

wow like if Anderson is worth a player who scored 40g in 42games in AAA Midget thats just insane for a guy of Anderson's calibre

It's very possible that Maguire was not going to report to the Silvertips so they traded his rights to Brandon which is closer to home and obtained some assets in return. Just guessing.

Anderson is not an asset, surely the Tips could have got a better deal for McGuire than this? After the debacle of the 3 trades last year, maybe trader Kelly is back!!

High school credits have a history of disappearing for kids that transfer from Canada to the U.S. Several years ago, Blaine Chrest was a highly touted prospect for the Wheat Kings and was traded to Portland for 5 players. When Chrest arrived in Portland he was told that his accumulated high school credits would not be recognized and he would have to start them over. He simply packed up and went home to Carnduff, Sk.

This was a precedent for players making this transition at the time. With Maguire being 17, perhaps this was the case again. Good for us though. We add an offensive weapon and free ourselves of the albatroos in the crease that was Brandon Anderson.

Chrest was the SJHL MVP with the Estevan Bruins the year Brandon traded him. Seems to me Chrest played 3 or 4 years for Portland though before getting traded to Saskatoon in his final year. To my knowledge, never played the game after that

Thought of that old radio show with the phrase "The Rest of the Story" after posting this ... and there was a really good Rest of the Story here, as the trade brought 4 future NHLers to Brandon, including Ray Ferarro, who set the single season WHL goal scoring record of 108 goals in a single season (and 192 points). What a trade by the Wheaties! Sorry for getting off topic ...

He played 12 games for Portland in 83/84 and came home. Feel free to look it up.

He played 12 games for Portland in 83/84...

Correct. He also played 68 games for Portland in 84/85, 71 games for Portland in 85/86 and 5 games for Portland in 86/87 before getting traded to Saskatoon.

Great trade for Wheaties ... 4 guys who played in the NHL (plus a 5th) for 1 guy who never did.

It's not a sure thing Maguire will report to Brandon either. Apparently his parents are heavy on him getting an education but being closer to home now probably has him thinking twice bout the WHL route.

Its perplexing at this day and age that some folks still think of "playing Major Junior" & "Getting an Education" as a one vs the other thing, as if they are somehow mutually exclusive.

The WHL Education Package is the best in the world, and it's high time folks started associating the WHL and Getting an Education as one and the same. I think there was 300 WHL grads and over 100 active players getting a quality education on the WHL scholorship plan last year. Another thing the WHL needs to stress more, is that many of the schools attended by WHL grads are BETTER than the NCAA schools offering athletic scholarships.

The one thing the NCAA has done succesfully has paint the picture of playing sports in the NCAA and getting an education as a package deal, but as we know, thats not always the case - especially with the gifted athletes, who now more than ever bolt early for the pros.

Parents who want their sons to get a quality education need to take a closer look at the WHL Education package, as in addition to being the best hockey path for most of the kids in its territory, it may also be the BEST route for the academically gifted athlete.
