Giants fail to bring their momentum in the second period forward into the third

Rockets Snipe Giants
Vancouver 3 Kelowna 5

I was unable to be at this game live and it’s unfortunate as it sounds like the Giants had a really strong second period to bounce back after letting themselves get down by two in the first. It’s also unfortunate that the boys could not take the momentum of the second period and bring it into the third. The boys got a bit lazy and sloppy to open the third and paid the price. The Giants handily out shot the Rockets, mainly on the back of a monster middle frame, but it was the Rockets who used their minimal shots to best advantage. Tyler Fuhr was between the pipes and will be the guy until Payton Lee returns after Liam Liston announced his retirement this week. The guys showed some battle back and jump, but only in the second period.

The Rockets opened the scoring 31 seconds into the first when the first shot of the game caromed past Tyler Fuhr off of a player in front. The Kelowna squad added to that lead later in the first in what was a pretty evenly played period of hockey. The Giants burst out in the second out-shooting the Rockets 17-3. Trevor Cheek got the come-back going on the PP. Brett Kulak and Jackson Houck got assists on the play. Less than two minutes later Carter Popoff scored a nice PP marker of his own. Kale Kessy and Tyler Morrison with the helpers. Kelowna clawed one back a couple of minutes later. Cain Franson was given a penalty shot and turned aside by former Giant netminder Jackson Whistle late in the second. Franson managed to score one with 5 seconds left in the middle frame to tie the game back up at 3’s. The Giants came out flat in third unable to carry the momentum they gained in the second to the final period. Kelowna scored two unanswered markers, a SH’d goal and PP tally, to salt away the victory.

Team Notes: Liam Liston announced his retirement from the game to pursue schooling in Alberta. Defenseman Kyle Krabben played his first WHL game as a Giant. The 17 yr old played two games for the Kootenay Ice this season as a call-up. Krabben was one of two prospects acquired for Austin Vetterl, the other being forward Douglas Morris. Krabben is currently playing with the AJHL Okotoks Oilers.

Fisticuffs: nada

Zebra Cage: Jason Cramer and Jon Stephenson – 5 PPs for each team, seemed fairly consistent as to what they called.

The Giants out shot the Rockets 27-19, but it was the Rockets who scored five on the night. The G’s went 2 for 5 on the PP, while holding the Kelowna squad to 1 for 5. The G-Men gave up a SH’d marker against. The G’s OA players were some of their best tonight and the boys played probably one of their best periods of the season in the second. Despite battling back they could not use that energy they found in the second and carry it over into the third period. In fact their third was in the words of Bill Wilms a “dumb period” - with lots of lazy mistakes and the kind of sloppy plays that allows this team to get themselves into trouble. The boys need to take the push-back they had tonight and focus on that kind of game and momentum quit the soft play and stop being lazy. The squad has to find more effective minutes per game and stop playing in spurts and starts. Consistency is still something that is eluding this young team.

Next Up: Three in three nights as the G’s head up to Kamloops to take on the Blazers before returning to square off versus the Cougars on Sunday at the Coliseum.

Three Stars

1. Dylan McKinley
2. Colten Martin
3. Carter Popoff

Dondo’s Hardhat: goes to Carter Popoff – good most every shift he was dangerous all night.
