Frustrating to get effort but no results, not even a goal. Growing pains.

Tigers Blank Giants
Vancouver 0 Medicine Hat 4

The Giants were unable to bulge the twine tonight, but there was no lack of try. The boys were still pretty sloppy in their own end, but they still did not give the Tigers an easy win despite the score. Kind of reminiscent of the Edmonton game where except for the first five minutes of the game the Giants were in this one for two plus good periods. Their third wasn’t nearly as sloppy as it was in Edmonton. The Tigers played their 20 year old starter tonight Cam Lanigan as they are in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the East. Truth be told though the Tigers are running more of a 1, 1a tandem between the pipes rather than a single goalie getting the bulk of the starts. Tonight’s win vaulted them from 9th to 7th in the East. The best players on the Giants were the role players who were unable to capitalize on the chances they created for themselves. The Tigers top players were kept off the score sheet tonight, but their depth players were able to find the back of the net. Sadly the few mistakes the boys made seemed to be fished out of their net not long after the gaffe. Lanigan robbed a few Giants players tonight, but this is still a team we should have been able to beat.

The Tigers opened the scoring 1:21 into the first. The G’s had a hard time finding their legs early, but pushed back well during the latter part of the period and game. The Hat squad added another marker in the second. The Tigers scored another early in the third when the Giants lost control of the puck in their own end. Using their third PP chance late in the final frame the Medicine Hat boys put the game out of reach. Up ‘til then the Giants PK was very effective, thanks primarily to Dalton Sward who was a one man penalty killing machine at times.

Team Notes: Scharffie has resigned as equipment manager for the G’s to join the Edmonton Oilers as their assistant equipment manager. Good luck and best wishes to Chad in his new career path. Loved him as a player, loved him as a Giant in all of his incarnations and for me he will always be a Giant and he will be missed.

Fisticuffs: One surprising fight. Arvin Atwal v. Chad Labelle .. Atwal didn’t like the way he was hit, shed the gloves and held on for a decent draw. Good to see the 17 yr old ready and willing to stick up for himself and drop the mitts.

Zebra Cage: Chris Crich and Cole Hamm. Fairly balanced and consistent by the sounds of it. No glaringly out place calls I recall.

The Giants were out shot 34-31. They went 0 for 3, while the Tigers were 1 for 3 scoring a late mostly meaningless PP marker that served to boost the score. The Giants put in effort tonight, but were unable to make the most of their opportunities. The Tigers got great net-minding, but the Giants still have to find a way to make those chances provide dividends. Tristan Sieben seemed to be all over the ice tonight and had some premium chances on the doorstep, but could not find the back of the net. Dalton Sward had a good night. Luca Leone may have been a –2, but he was also noticed in a good way and had some good chances.

Next Up: The Giants have one more chance for another win on this road trip. Tomorrow night they head to Lethbridge to take on the Hurricanes, before returning for a Saturday tilt at the Coliseum versus the Rockets.

Three Stars

1. Cam Lanigan
2. Jacob Doty
3. Blake Penner

Dondo’s Hardhat: goes to Tristan Sieben, his hard work tonight, creating the chances he did warrants the lid.

Anyone have any information on why Cheek wasn't in the line-up? As our only remaining 20 year old I would have expected him to be there. Barring injury my guess would be that a trade is in the works ...?

Can answer my own question now:

Giants Gain Draft Pick in Trade with Edmonton

The Giants have traded 20 year-old Trevor Cheek to the Edmonton Oil Kings in exchange for a second round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

Cheek, who was acquired by Vancouver from the Calgary Hitmen earlier this season, has played 39 games with the Giants, registering 18 goals and 14 assists.
