Wes Vannieuwenhuizen is sidelined for four weeks with a hand injury. (Province files.)
Vancouver Giants team captain Wes Vannieuwenhuizen hurt his hand blocking a shot against the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday and will be sidelined for at least four weeks, according to general manager Scott Bonner.
The overage defenceman has two goals, 10 points and 88 penalty minutes in 40 regular season games.
Bonner also said that winger Rob Trzonkowski, picked up last week in the Kale Kessy deal with the Kamloops Blazers, suffered a knee injury in Sunday’s game against the Calgary Hitmen and is out indefinitely. It was just the third game with Vancouver for the 18-year-old. In 44 games this year, he has three goals, five points and 54 penalty minutes.
As well, the Giants re-assigned goaltender Tyler Fuhr, 17, to a yet-to-be-named Alberta Junior A team on Sunday. He was 4-8-0-0, with a 4.74 goals against and an .830 save percentage for Vancouver. The Giants added Jared Rathjen, 18, in deal with Victoria Royals last week, and he’ll handle back-up chores to Payton Lee, 16.
