Stahl is up to his old tricks - let's hope he sits for more than a few games

Royals Snipe Giants
Vancouver 4 Victoria 6

Talk about a feisty game. Fights early and often. The Royals were a pretty dirty team tonight led by chief thug Tyler Stahl, who was ejected early for a check to the head. I suspect he find himself with a few more games off courtesy of the league. The difference in this one was special teams. The Royals were 3 for 5 while the Giants got goals in a variety of ways: PP, penalty shot and 4 on 4 in the middle of the five-minute major when the Giants were tagged with a penalty. Brandon Magee scored 4 goals on the night, all of them set-up by Alex Gogolev. Cain Franson and Jackson Houck had good nights as well and were dangerous throughout the game. The Giants still allowed some solid chances due to some bad positioning and sloppy giveaways and they paid for them. Credit the G’s for not folding and hanging in there, but their PK let them down by allowing a couple of tap in goals into open nets due to poor coverage. It felt like one or the other team was constantly on the PP in this one.

The Royals opened the scoring early in the game. Vancouver got that back a few minutes after with a nice solo effort by Carter Popoff, burying the puck in the top of the net. The G’s got their first lead when Cain Franson found the back of the net, off of a Reid Zalitach feed. Victoria tied it up on an early goal in the second off of a poor turn-over. Jackson Houck was later hauled down going to the net and awarded a penalty shot. He found the back of the cage with the opportunity giving the Giants a 3-2 bulge. The Royals made two second period PPs work for them as they took back the lead before the end of the period. The G’s allowed a goal just over thirty seconds into the final frame. That goal chased Lee from the net. An early PP marker added to the divide and gave the home team a three goal lead. A late PP chance allowed the Giants to get close and make it interesting with about 3 minutes left. Jackson Houck scored his second of the game as his team was playing 5 on 3 with time ticking down. Brett Kulak and Cain Franson had the helpers. Too many sloppy mistakes and missed coverage on the PP and the Giants put themselves in a hole they couldn’t get out of yet again. Definitely some positives in this one, but the Victoria squad were better and Magee had a lights out night.

Team Notes: Wes Vannieuwenhuizen should be back soon and Scott Cooke is close to returning. The young players are doing a good job and seem to be progressing. The only two plus players tonight were Dalton Sward and Reid Zalitach. The Giants came across the water with 21 players, so no-one will be sitting tomorrow night.

Fight Night: Mason Geertson v. Tim Traber 49 seconds into the game. Arvin Atwal v. Logan Fisher about mid-period, coming off the same play as the checking to the head penalty by Stahl. Blake Orban v. Brett Cote, Cote with the instigator and to wrap it up Jason Trott v. Colton Dixon.

Zebra Cage: Brett Iverson and Fraser Lawrence called some soft ones and allowed some players to take liberties without punishment. I’ve seen worse. They made some tough calls like waiving off a goal coming from the point when the player was in the crease and awarding a penalty shot. They also had their hands full with frequent scrums after the whistle.

It’s pretty clear these two teams really are developing a hate for one another. The Giants went 1 for 5 on the PP scoring a very late goal. Their PP has been better as of late and has climbed to 16th. The Royals feasted going 3 for 5 and it was the difference in the game. Houck scored a nice penalty shot. Franson scored a nice goal scorer’s type of goal and we seem to finally be getting our skilled players more consistently contributing. Lee had little chance on a lot of the goals some of which ended up being tap-ins into an open net. Defensive coverage in their own end is the Giants homework.

Next Up: The Royals again tomorrow night in Victoria. It’ll either be a knock-down drag out battle or both squads will be too tired to get involved like that two nights in a row.

Three Stars

1. Brandon Magee
2. Brandon Fushimi
3. Alex Gogolev

Dondo’s Hardhat: goes to – Jackson Houck. I think he should have had one of the stars tonight as the Royals performance wasn’t that dominant. Anyway 2 goals and some great effort all night, warrants the award from me.
