Royals Thump Giants
Vancouver 1 Victoria 4

The Giants didn't really want to play this game it seems as they barely showed up, wasted PP chances and generally showed no desire to go for the win. They had moments in their own end of the ice, blocked shots and held their zone from time to time, but did not make it tough for their opponent to find twine and did not force the home team to a pay a price when they got close to the Giants net. Again it wasn't an awful outing, but not good enough and hunger was lacking. I'd say the best scoring chances they had came in the first period. They stumbled through the second getting a whopping 2 whole shots on net with 3 PP chances. In the third they finally lucked into a goal caroming off the boards and into an open net off of a shot from the neutral zone. They earned very little and had no interest it scoring it seemed.

The Royals opened the scoring just over five minutes in. They added a PP marker before the end of the period. They added another PP marker in the second. They went up 4-0 in the third less than a minute into the final frame. Cain Franson was given a gift late in the game when he dumped the puck in and it took an odd bounce and into the net. Hell of a way to break a shut-out. Blake Orban and Brett Kulak with the helpers.

Fight Night: Only one in the second Jason Trott v. Taylor Crunk.

Zebra Cage: Jason Cramer and Colin Watt.. when they allowed Tim Traber to lay a wicked elbow early in the first and not call it and then call a weaker elbow minutes later it was clear it was going to be a petty inconsistent effort and it was.

The poor reffing didn't really matter much for the Giants though as tonight if they had had 20 PP opportunities they would have continued to have piss poor puck support, not shoot and get pucks stripped easily and cleared even more easily. The Victoria chances were something else though as they continued to work their PP well.

The Giants were out shot 27-18. They went 0 for 5 on their disaster PP chances. Not one of their man-advantages looked even moderately dangerous and their puck support was abysmal. The Royals were 2 for 5 and had no trouble finding the back of the net with their chances. The line of Popoff, Houck and Franson looked okay despite not getting rewarded. Popoff had the best chance of the night in the first period.

The Giants true scoring chances were very minimal though and the goal they did get was a joke. Just not good enough. I know they are young and learning, but the effort and drive to win continue to elude them and it shouldn't. The one thing they should have in spades is youthful drive and energy, but they played like a tired and lazy team tonight and that's not good enough. They can be better, they know they can, but they kind of gave in after a couple of goals against.

Next Up: The Giants head back to the Coliseum with their tail between their legs first gifting the Royals a game that matched the franchise (counting Chilliwack) best win streak (6) and then gave them a new record win-streak tonight (7 games) and in the process the Giants losing their 6th straight. The Gs take on Raiders on Wednesday and they need to get off the schnide.

Three Stars

1. Brandon Magee
2. Brett Cote
3. Ryan Gagnon

Dondo's Hardhat: goes to Carter Popoff. He seemed to be the only Giant with some jump.
