Fairly intense game for two teams from a different conferences.

Giants Gordie Hurricanes
Vancouver 5 Lethbridge 4 OT

The Giants have to stop allowing early goals and goals early into periods. The G’s managed a third straight win for the first time this season. The game was intense for two teams that rarely see each other. The Giants allowed a goal in the first two minutes, but then bounced back with three unanswered to take a 3-1 lead going into the first period break. The Hurricanes rebounded in the second scoring a couple and tying the game at 3s. The Giants pulled ahead with a short-handed marker. The ‘canes tied it up before the end of the third, scoring the only goal in the final frame. The Giants found twine in OT to get the victory, getting one of their owners (on his birthday) a gift of a win. A good old-fashioned feisty tilt for Gordie Howe’s birthday celebration.

The ‘canes opened the scoring at 1:53 of the first. Carter Popoff tied it up at around the 13 minute mark. Taylor Vickerman and Travis McEvoy got the helpers. Dalton Sward scored another 34 seconds later. Arvin Arwal got the lone helper. Taylor Vickerman bulged the twine late in the period as he put home a rebound off of a Carter Popoff shot. Tyler Morrison got the other assist. The Hurricanes scored 1:00 into second. They added another late in the period on the PP. A couple of minutes later Riley Kieser added a short-handed goal to pull the G’s ahead once again. Sward had the lone assist. The Hurricanes were not going to lay down though and scored the only goal of the third. The Giants got a late chance when they were awarded a penalty shot, but Alec Baer was unable to get the puck past Ty Rimmer. Carter Popoff scored the game-winner in OT, assisted by Cain Franson and Arvin Atwal.

Team Notes: Jackson Houck was back in the line-up. Alec Baer the recent signing from a US high school by the Giants played his first game and had his chances, but found himself on the minus side.

Fight Night: Who do you expect? That’s right Atwal up to his old tricks. Arvin Atwal v. Brady Ramsay. Arvin demolished Brady in this one. Brady was the instigator.

Zebra Cage: Steve Papp and Nick Swaine. Lots of misconducts and unsportsmanlikes makes me feel the refs were being reactive. The game itself was intense with a bunch of scrums.

The Giants out-shot the Hurricanes 36-24. The home town boys went 0 for 5 on the PP and allowed 1 for 4 against, but managed a short-handed tally. The Giants had some lulls in their game, but were not willing to be pushed around and scored some nice goals mainly going to the net and getting traffic in front of Rimmer. Popoff had a couple of goals and an assist and played an intense game. Sward, who seems to be finally being rewarded for all of his hard work, managed a goal and an assist. Young Taylor Vickerman had a fine time playing with McEvoy and Popoff and had a goal and a helper himself. Atwal was +3 and had a couple of assists. The grinders were finding twine in this one and it was good to see the production spread around. Defense could have been better and the Giants didn’t need to give a point, but they didn’t give-up or back down and played old-school hockey that would have made Gordie proud. Good on ya boys.

Next Up: The Giants try for a fourth straight victory in Kamloops as they take on the Blazers there on Saturday. The Giants edged out the Blazers in Kamloops on Wednesday after struggling out of the gate and will have a tough time duplicating that effort, but should be able to compete with the Kamloops squad and give them a game. The boys return to the Coliseum for a tilt on Sunday versus the ‘Tips who should be a very beatable team, but have had the Giants number in most of the games between the two squads this season. The Giants hope they can end the season on a high which could carry over into next season.

Three Stars

1. Carter Popoff
2. Russell Maxwell
3. Cain Franson

Dondo’s Hardhat: goes to Carter Popoff who had some nice production tonight 2G and 1A, but earned all of his points with some good puck hunger.

They had a pretty chippy game in Lethbridge too when Brady Ramsay kicked at a Giants player while he was down on the ice near the puck. He ended up getting a suspension because of that.

Either way no complaints from me. That was a fairly entertaining game. I wish the refs didn't get so damn paranoid in the second period when they started to call a penalty every time a player sneezed close to another player. God forbid another fight break out. That would be so awful now wouldn't it? :clown
