Here is a link from "Taking Note" and next season the OHL will change the scholarship giving player longer to use it. Teams will have expense accounts for to a max of $470.00 per month per player and the player may expense his cell phone and each player is eligible for $1000.00 for out of season training. Roughly that is about $ 55,000.00 added expense per team. Can the small market teams afford? http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/ohl-ups-the-ante--makes-significant-changes-to-player-benefit-packages-223242217.html

Portland didn't suffer too much out of the sanctions they received. They had already traded away the picks they were deprived of. Two of their late round picks Carter Czaikowski (Defense 6th rnd #121) and Skyler MacKenzie (Forward 8th rnd #176) made Team Alberta U16 team. That's the same team Steel was on. Both players are can't miss prospects. A one point MacKenzie was in the top 10 in the AMHL. It would be nice if we drafted that well. In all Portland lost about two picks. They will lose very little this draft either and have a first round pick in a deal with Calgary.

Portland did a few more things in the recruitment area like flying in players and families, putting them up in nice hotels and giving them glitz weekends. This was done to convince particularly US prospects to sign. Parents were given a number of free trips in during the season to see their sons. There were similar issues but not the same.

Smaller markets are going to have to do what the Riders did years ago. They will have to do major fund raisers, raffles etc. to raise the required money for this and operating money. They can no longer count on seats in the rink, and that's another area small market teams will need to work harder on.

Yes I knew about the family travel and there was probable more that we did not hear about. I am in no way defending Portland. They broke the rules and should suffer the consequences.

Just think that with the OHL doing this it is not long until the Dub will be and it is a large addition to the expense side of the team ledger.

just did a fast 470 * 24 * 6 add 24000 for off season that's $91,680.00 current its 75 * 24 * 6 $10,800.00 so that is a $80,000.00 hit to the teams

I read an article a while back where some NCAA schools are considering the possibility of Major Junior players being allowed to receive scholarships. This without losing seasons for playing in Major junior games. You don't have to scratch too far beneath the surface and its well known all sorts of things go on in football, baseball, basketball and other sports. The paying of athletes has long gone on in most big schools. If a kid played his 17 and 18 year old seasons on Major Junior without being drafted he could then opt to go to a NCAA team which might be able to give him a 4 year deal.

The point is the CHL is competing hard for players and quite a few young talents aren't reporting to major junior clubs because of the enticements from NCAA schools through the Jr A programs. Major Junior clubs have to sweeten the pot to keep and expand their base of players. Most teams in the CHL will need to find new and inventive ways to raise the money needed. It will be a burden on some smaller market teams who are already having shortfalls in operating budgets. In many cases these teams employ a number of people so maybe the community through their City Council's may have to give some financial help for the economic activity these teams create.
