FORMER AMERICAN FRANTTI NAMED ASSISTANT COACH

Kennewick, WA – Tri-City Americans are pleased to announce the hiring of Gordie Frantti as assistant coach of the hockey club.

The former American played for the club as a 20-year-old in 1990-91 after leaving Western Michigan University. He was a sixth round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1988.

Frantti signed with the San Jose Sharks in 1991 and played two seasons for the International League’s Kansas City Blades, winning the Turner Cup in 1992. His professional career found him making stops as a player/assistant coach in Huntington, West Virginia and Nashville, Tennessee (East Coast Hockey League) from 1993-95. Frantti then served as head coach/assistant general manager of the Central Wyoming Outlaws of the American Frontier League in 1996-97.

Frantti then returned to the ice to play a final pro season in 1997-98 for the Monroe Moccasins of the WPHL in 1997-98. He closed out his playing career and returned to the Tri-Cities.

Over the last five years Frantti has served as head coach of the Tri-City Amateur Hockey Association’s Midget AA club, winning the state title in 2004 and 2005. During his term as coach the Midget club went 152-31-14. Gordie showed his devotion by also coaching the Mite select and Squirt rep AA teams. He also led the Squirt reps to the Washington State title in 2005.

“We are very excited to have Gordie on board as our assistant coach and he will be a solid addition to our staff,” said Americans vice president/general manager Bob Tory. “His roots in the community, a member of the alumni and success in the local hockey program make him a natural addition to our club.”

It said when he stopped playing hockey he moved back to the Tri-Cities... It got me thinking because he only played one season for the Americans. How many other former Ams players now live in the Tri-Cities? Anyone know? Does this happen with other teams often as well?

With the climate here can you really blame them?
I've often heard thats a big reason Am's players like to play here so well. What other WHL city can you golf in February???
