Just listened to this one as I was working, but it sounded like a good one for the hometown fans

Giants Snuff Blazers
Vancouver 3 Kamloops 0

Don Hay’s homecoming was good for his former team if not for his current one. The Giants blanked the Blazers 3-0, capitalising on a couple of man advantages and some sharp play around the net. The boys still need to learn how to finish as they had some short-handed chances and odd man rushes which should have filled the net, but that’s part of the learning curve.

The two teams played to a scoreless first, which was not without some excitement. Payton Lee had to make some very good stops early on. Dmitry Osipov scored on the PP mid-way through the second, slipping into the open area and snapping home a quick wrister. Joel Hamilton and Jackson Houck got the helpers. 1:12 later a carom off of the back boards came out to Arvin Atwal in the slot. Atwal made no mistake burying the puck. The Giants added some insurance in the third, using another PP chance. Tyler Benson found some finish when Matt Bellerive made a crisp on the tape pass. Mason Geertsen had the other assist. The Giants shut the door down the stretch, preserving the goose-egg for Lee.

Team Notes: Atwal did not make the trip to Prince George due to a minor injury and they missed him. Tonight he showed how valuable he is in the line-up. Shaun Dosanjh played up tonight, centring the fourth line with Jesse Roach and Brendan Holterhus. The Giants are now 5 and 1 at home this season and 0-3 on the road. Thomas Foster failed to garner a point breaking his 8 game point streak.

The Giants out shot the Blazers 31-23. The home squad went 2 for 4 on the PP, while holding the Blazers to 0 for 3. Reffing seemed pretty decent and balanced in this one. The Giants had a tough time getting their PP to connect in PG, but found some chemistry and open ice in tonight’s tilt.

The Giants don’t get much rest before they take on those darn Cats again Saturday night. The Cougars took both games on their home ice and the Giants would like some revenge of their own. The Gs have done well at home so far this young season and hope to continue that trend. The puck drops on the 18th at the Rink on Renfrew at 7:00pm PDT. It should be a feisty game.

Three Stars

1. Payton Lee
2. Arvin Atwal
3. Carter Popoff

Dondo’s Hardhat: I’m giving my hardhat to Arvin Atwal tonight. He seemed to be equally good defensively as he did offensively. He was very visible in a good way and scored a smart goal by being in the right place.
