Winter Hawks Trade For 20-year-old Winger

The Portland Winter Hawks, looking to add some scoring touch to their attack in 2005-06, acquired 20-year-old right wing Jonathan Bubnick from the Regina Pats today in exchange for 19-year-old center Garrett Festerling and Portland’s third round choice in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft.

“We think we have a chance to make a run for things this year, but I felt we needed a little more experienced finish around the net,” said Hawks’ General Manager Ken Hodge. “We have a nice nucleus of players that we feel can get Jonathan the puck at the right time and we think he has good scoring instincts that could come to the forefront this season in Portland.”

Bubnick was limited to 51 games with a knee injury on a rebuilding Regina team that missed the WHL playoffs in the Eastern Division last season, scoring 21 goals and 37 points in the 51 games. In 2003-04, Bubnick played all 72 games with Regina, posting (19-22-41). He played a total of 74 games with Regina and Kamloops in 2002-03, posting (13-12-25) as a 17-year old. As a 16-year-old rookie with Kamloops in 2001-02, Bubnick had (2-2-4) in 56 games. Bubnick was traded from Kamloops to Regina on December 31, 2002, along with defenseman Kyle Deck, in exchange for forward Grant Jacobsen and the rights to defenseman Max Gordichuk, who was later traded from Kamloops to Vancouver.

“Jonathan played with Dan DaSilva (Hawks’ overage winger) in minor hockey in Saskatoon and they are good friends,” said Portland Coach Mike Williamson. “We think he will give us some needed offensive punch. He has good speed, shoots the puck well and we have heard good things about the character he brings to a team. It is tough to give up “Fest”, but you have to give up something to get something. We appreciate all the contributions that Garrett Festerling made to the Portland Winter Hawks and wish him well in Regina.”

Bubnick, 6’0, 180, was Kamloops’ 4th round choice in the 2000 WHL Bantam Draft. He is an undrafted free agent.

Anyone from Portland have any information on Festerling? What will he bring to the Pats?

I wonder how that will work out...Bubnick was pretty hot for awhile, but he never really got back to that after his knee injury. Mind you the team as a whole kinda fell apart while he was out. When he was injured he was playing on team that didn't always win, but worked hard. When he was injured they kinda gave up and never really got back to where they were. When he came back, he came back to a mess. Hope everything works out well for him in Portland!
