Silvertips mix it up
Kyle Annesley scores two goals to lead Team White to a 2-1 victory in annual intrasquad game.

EVERETT - Kyle Annesley looks ready for the fight to make the Everett Silvertips' roster. And all of Everett's goaltenders already appear to be in midseason form.

Annesley scored two goals and the duo of Matt Esposito and Leland Irving combined to make 37 saves, leading Team White to a 2-1 victory over Team Green on Sunday night in the Silvertips' third annual Green vs. White Intra-Squad Game.

"It's nice to get back out there and throw some hits, take some hits," Annesley said. "It feels good."

An estimated 2,000 fans were on hand at the Everett Events Center to watch the Silvertips' first game experience of the season.

Annesley, one of six 20-year-olds trying to earn one of the three overager spots on the roster, scored early in the second period and midway through the third to give Team White a 2-0 lead.

"Being in the position I'm in, I have to try just as hard as all these young guys do to make a spot in this lineup this year," Annesley said. "Putting the puck in the net only helps your position."

Esposito and Irving did the rest. The 1989-born Esposito had a busy 30 minutes in net, saving all 17 shots he faced. Then Irving, last season's No. 2, had an even more hectic time, smothering 20 shots of his own.

John Lammers scored with 2 minutes, 53 seconds remaining, but Team Green was unable to squeeze in the tying goal.

It was a somewhat frustrating night for the Team Green offense. Team Green had the majority of the possessions, outshooting Team White 38-25. The line of Lammers, Zach Hamill and Brady Calla was particularly dangerous. But with the exception of Lammers' goal , Team Green was unable to put the puck in the net.

"Luck wasn't on our side tonight I guess you could say," Lammers said. "We worked hard, but sometimes it just doesn't go in. It was good goaltending by their goalies."

Green goaltenders Chris Ward (13 saves) and Shayne Barrie (10 saves), both 1989 born, also played well as Everett's goalies earned much of the spotlight, even with No. 1 Michael Wall receiving the night off.

The Green vs. White Game officially ended Everett's training camp, with those who aren't expected to make the roster returning home. Next weekend's preseason tournament at the Everett Events Center is the next step toward determining the final roster.

Team White broke through 50 seconds into the second period thanks to a perfect tic-tac-toe play. Peter Mueller, at the left point, sent a diagonal pass to Torrie Wheat on the right. Wheat immediately fired a pass back across the crease to Annesley at the far post and Annesley banged it in to make it 1-0.

Annesley made it 2-0 at 9:32 of the third period. He received the puck with space on the right, skated around a defender, then cut across the crease and scored into the top corner.

Team Green made it interesting in the final three minutes when, immediately after pulling Barrie from the goal, Lammers tipped in Shaun Heshka's pass to cut the lead to 2-1.

Slap shots: Left wing Karel Hromas, who finished second on the team in goals last season with 18, departed for the Chicago Blackhawks' rookie training camp and did not play Sunday. The Blackhawks selected Hromas in the fourth round of the 2004 NHL Draft. Present but not playing because of injuries were defensemen Taylor Ellington (concussion) and Zach Sim (leg) and center Zack Dailey (hand) ... Mueller was rested for the third period. ... Three 15-year-olds, forwards Kyle Beach and Matt Ius and defenseman Matt Strong, took part in the game. ... Two Puget Sound residents, 1987-born forward Damir Alic (Kent) and 1989-born forward Paulos Shiferaw (Seattle), also participated. ... Sixteen-year-old forward Shane Harper, who wasn't on hand Sunday, is expected to rejoin the team Tuesday.
