It wasn't pretty, but the Giants were able to go undefeated in the Everett Pre-Season Tournament following a 2-1 win over the Kamloops Blazers Sunday afternoon. With the victory over their B.C. Division rivals, Vancouver finished off the tourney with a record of 3-0.

The only goal of the first period came to the Giants on a nice give-and-go between a pair of rookie fowards. After receiving a pass in the left corner, Mitch Czibere returned the puck to the slot for Spencer Machacek. His shot went through the pads of Kamloops netminder Michael Maniago and gave the Giants their first lead of the day at 14:38.

The score stayed the same through the rest of the first period and all of the second period, but not without either team getting some opportunities. Both clubs had 5-on-3 power plays that lasted over a minute, but no real great scoring chances resulted in those scenarios.

Kamloops was able to pull back on to even terms early on in the third period. A nice individual effort by forward Tanner Irwin allowed him to get some space between the face off circles and snap a shot between the pads of netminder Tommy Tartaglione. Irwin's goal came at 1:47.

There were two fights on the afternoon and they both came in the final frame. Milan Lucic and Benn Olson had a huge tilt with both sluggers landing some huge right-handed bombs. A few minutes later, probably the most memorable moment of the game occured when Mitch Bartley went at it with his younger brother Victor! No real huge shots landed by either player, but it was certainly something they, or their parents who were in attendance, won't soon forget.

The eventual game-winning goal came late in the contest. After some good work on the cycle by Kyle Lamb on the end boards, David Rutherford wheeled around the zone until he got to the right face off circle and snapped a shot over the shoulder of goalie Kurt Kramer. Rutherford's first goal in a Giants uniform came at 17:44.

The two teams finished the game tied in shots with 22 apiece. Vancouver went 0-for-9 on the power play while Kamloops went 0-for-8.

Vancouver wraps up the tournament with victories over the Everett Silvertips (2-0 Friday), Spokane Chiefs (6-3 Saturday), and the Kamloops Blazers (2-1 Sunday). The Giants will now prepare for another pre-season tournament as the team takes part in the Tri-City Americans 5-team event next weekend. The Giants will have plenty of rookies in action that weekend as ten players will be aware at various NHL camps. Vancouver will open up the tournament Friday September 9 against the hometown Ams

Missed the games myself, but from what I have read around the internet the rookies good, but all the games were filled with lots of penalties. At least 20 calls per game. I believe the Spokane/Giants game had almost 40 calls!

The players had better wake up and realize that the refs are now calling everything. Hopefully all the teams get it figured out before the games count for real.

Viktor hit Timmy Kraus with a monster cross check to the neck. Mitch jumped on him.. don't think he knew it was Viktor at first...not many punches thrown, mainly wrestling.

Good job Giants. It was fun to watch them during the tournament. During the spoke van game was definetly close to 40 penalties. Some of it was a good job by the officals, some looked like the ref was making up for the offseason. Good luck this year and hope to see you in the reg season and playoffs.

Anyone of the Giants that stood out for you as having a really good tourny?

If the Howarth twins can fight each other why not the Bartley's?
