The Brandon Wheat Kings won their first game of the Western Hockey League pre-season Friday night, outscoring the visiting Swift Current Broncos 5-2.

The win improved Brandon's pre-season record to 1-2-0 with one game remaining - Saturday night in Regina against the Pats.

19-year old Mark Derlago scored a first period shorthanded goal and then set up another by linemate Tyler Dittmer to pace the Wheat Kings, who led 2-1 and 3-2 at the period breaks.

Codey Burki, Riley Day and John Wikner also scored for the defending WHL Eastern Conference Champions, who open up their regular season schedule one week from tonight - September 23rd - against the Pats at the Keystone Centre.

Donny Lloyd and Jeremy Schenderling replied for the Broncos, who outshot Brandon to the tune of 37-34. Brandon netminder Tyler Plante, a second round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers was solid in his first game back from pro camp. Sixteen of his saves came during the first period of play.
